Now using a Netgear DG834 wired router (do not want my brain on simmer
with 2.4 GHz microwave-oven wireless). Speedtouch driver uninstalled and
modem unplugged.
MTU = 1478, RWIN = 517680, PPPoA.
Still capped at 4.0 +/- 0.2 Mbps at an exchange only 0.5 km away.
Modem upload cap was 241 kbps and router cap is now 251 kbps.
Browser performance is snappy, but would've liked to belong to the
> 5 Mbps club. Now trying to find out if the router can display signal
level stats.

Thanks Steve, yes that's it.
I did actually play around with this before, but failed to notice the signal
level data there. Eyeball trouble.
My download speeds are fine. I have been getting high speeds for around a month now and was only disconnected once (maybe living right next to the exchange helps ). What pisses me off is the crap upload speed. I have several websites, I need a fast upload speed to upload everything.
Will we ever get a better upload speed? I could get around 50KB/s before all this crap started..

The speed above is likely to be due to ongoing maintenance/upgrade
work rather than increased heavy loading, because it's unusual for me.
My upgraded speed should be ~ 4 Mbps.
Strange, though, as my browser response seems just as nippy.
I have been giving these clowns the benefit of the doubt for so long now that my patience has finally dried up.
At the beginning of June I was getting 2mb roughly, and over the last week or so it has got worse and worse, as you can see from the above.
I called tech support endless times and was told the following:
1) My ADSL filter must be faulty
2) My phone socket must be faulty
3) Lets do a line test
I finally spoke to someone who admitted to me that yes they know the service is crap but they don't know when it will be fixed.
The service status recorded message says as much (although at the beginning of June they said it would be resolved by mid June, now it says end of June - it's now July and I'm still waiting)
I asked for a MAC code and was told that I would need to pay to get out of my contract - when I replied that although they are not technically in breach (even though I have never even seen it because they didn't send me one) - I am sure they will have worded it to "speeds UP TO 8mb" - this is ridiculous.
I will leave next week and go to BT. They may cost a whole lot more but at least they own the infrastructure and I don't need the hassle. I was with Demon for 3 years with no problem at all. It seems I am on the phone to Orange at least 3 times a week and they never seem able or willing to either give me a straight answer to fix the damn thing.
f**** 'em, f**** 'em all I say
