Hello delticman
There is an exchange checker on this website. If your details come up, then you should be able to migrate to Virgin Media...
The "problem... which may be an alarm system" maybe simply the fact that you are with Orange on the LLU system (so long as you do not have an alarm system in place on your telephone line).
Now that you have your MAC, you can use this with Virgin Media (phone them to check that they will accept it - I'm pretty sure they do) and you're on your way!

Thanx, admin K. I just done the exchange check on here, and yes, it came up. I'm 99.9999% sure that NO alarm system exists on my line, so thanx for the advice that Virgin 'should be able to' accept me. On reading from their 'line test' that due to the 'problem' re alarm or connection 'problems', an engineer may have to visit my home to check things out. I don't mind this happening, as long as I can get away from Orange!!! I'll give Virgin a ring tomorrow, to find out more.
Thanx agen!!!
The Exchange is Maidenhead. The problem began 4 weeks ago when I got a "congratulations" we've upgraded you message from Orange. I had been getting 2MB - since then 70k (yep 70k) constantly. My neighbour is also on Orange and mostly has nothing.
My company pays for the line so Orange phone me (it's either Kevin or Dave because apparently there's only 3 of them in total) every other day or so with an "update". Here's how the conversation goes...
Orange: "Hi It's Dave from Orange...have to had an update from us today?"
Me: <trying not to laugh or cry> No?
Orange: <feigning surprise> Oh really? Well just to let you know we are still looking into the problem.
Me: So you're phoning with an update to tell me...there's no update.
Orange: Well, coughs embarrsingly, yes.
Me: Can I suggest you stop looking up your own A*£$! and look into the technical problem
Orange: <Patronising and scripted>I understand your frustration
At that point I lost it - told them not to bother phoning anymore.
I don't even have the abilty to reject the contract. Company seems disinterested so on it goes. How am I typing this? Using a 3G phone, yep with Orange and that's rubbish too.

We were contacted today by BBC Radio 5 Live's Wake Up To Money programme and will be on their show tomorrow morning between 5.30 and 6.00am talking about speed... Or the lack of it!
Not because its slow, but because its been broken for almost 28 days. I hope it stays broke so I can get out my contract on monday (28 days are up) lol.
The last time I was successfully able to connect to the internet using Orange Wireless and Talk Live Box was April 2nd 2007! All was fine before LLU!
I have been shouted and sworn at, been hung up on and told to "stop moaning". I have been promised 6 times that someone will call me back and no-one does. I am fed up with speaking to people who are reading from a crib sheet "thank you for calling Orange, how may I help you. I can certainly help you with that, I am sorry for the inconvenience ...."
On the strength of previously good customer support (?) I recently took out 2 mobile phone contracts with Orange which meant I no longer pay for Broadband ... yippee (not). Now I am unable to afford to switch Internet providers because I cannot get out of the mobile contracts without facing huge penalties.
If anyone has any helpful advice I'd be very greatful!
hi,
been reading all these posts...I don't seem to be on LLU at the moment...my exchange is Rotherham...but since being *upgraded* from 2mb to 8mb about 3 months ago...have not had two consecutive days when my speeds have been anywhere near what they should be...typically getting 1mb/s at the best...but the last two days I have had a pathetic download speed of around 256kb ...back to the days of dial-up it seems...my router gives me a rate down of around 4780kb...Oh how happy I would be to get that kind of speed regularly...until I came across this forum I thought I was on my own...how wrong can a guy be!!!...forgive my ignorance but what exactly is the MAC code...I gather it's something you need if you want to migrate to another ISP...which I am seriously considering...but when they *upgraded* me they gave me another 12 month contract which I probably can't get out of until next year
would be grateful for anyone to shed some light on this for me...and apologies for the length of the rant...but it's good (in a weird kind of way) to know there are others who are having the same problems

What a cheek telling you to stop moaning about the lack of service your actually paying for.

Delticman...................I guess this might be too late but whatever you do don't sign up to Virgin Media...........I am in the process of escaping. Trust me Orange is the best ISP in the world compared to the bunch of idiots at Virgin Media........
They talk a good game but if you want service go to a service provider because Virgin do not know how to provide service.
They have lost a huge amount of customers as a resullt of their abysmal service.
Virgin Media is totally money driven, they are not investing and the rising interest rates combined with the declining customer base will force some restructuring of the organisation
