the one that seems to be working for me and giving the best speed is....
ADSL splitter plugged directly into the main phone socket
connected into that is a high speed ADSL modem cable which is plugged into my 108mb Wireless G ADSL modem router!
On buying a new house, I found the upstairs phone socket was two cheapy Dixons extensions together (over 30 metres) with around 10db drop on it (and a screw for the carpet runners through it).
Replace your extensions if you are having problems and fit it directly into your BT master socket with a splicing tool - its easy enough to do. I got just over 1db drop over that.
Maplin sell the required cable, go for the twisted pair 6 core (just in case) as its a trivial price difference (£15.00 for 30m). The splice tool is £0.99, the upstairs extension wall socket was about £5.
So you can do it youself for about the price of two those tatty Dixons/PC World specials and get a good signal through.
