I've been a freeserve 500k user since the early days and had reallly had enough since the big outage last October.
It took a while to extract myself from Oranges clutces, this is what I went with:-
gmail, freewebs sitebuilder, flickr and Sky broadband
The trickiest part was extracting a MAC code from Orange customer support. They gave me all the usual tricks mentioned here:-
-We don't have any record of the MAC code request you made last week
-You haven't said how you would like to receive your MAC code. email? duh
-We have technical issues and can't issue codes right now
-There's no point asking for one as LLU MAC Codes won't work with Sky
In the end I gave notice and went for the wait a month and then wait several weeks while the line is cleared route. If you're out of contract then they do nothing for a month before clearing the line. This they also used as a disuading tactic.
Luckily a MAC code email arrived out of the blue the day after I gave notice so I was able to migrate during their notice period.
It was quite pathetic in the end. Orange took to calling me, yes ME and pleaded with me to stay a couple of times. Though the first time they rang at home my gf answered and rang me at work to say they called. This was the first time they'd ever rang me. When I rang up and asked what they wanted they said they had no idea why they rang me! When they did ring back the guy didn't have much to say when I asked him why I'd want to resign up with What magazines worst ISP provider in the UK as voted in March.
I've found this website useful over the last few months while I was migrating, so I thought I'd share my experience with everyone!
My divorce from Orange came through last week when I migrated to BT. It's fantastic, I can view videos on YouTube without the data stream stalling every few seconds and maintain a speed of 5Meg even at peak times compared to the 100K I was getting with Orange.
Amusingly when I requested my MAC key the bloke at Orange said "You'll have the same problem with another provider you know." Well Ya Boo Sucks! to you Mr Orange man.
Granted it is more expensive but you obviously get what you pay for.

Happy migrating to those of you left!
I believe you are migrated at your current speed which often means a fee to upgrade your connection speed with the new IP after transfer. Maybe before leaving Orange people should ask for a free upgrade to the fastest speed their connection will support on pain of cancellation of their contract should the request be refused. Worth a try surely.

I certainly didn't have to pay extra for the increased speed I get with Zen.

No way would I recommend it. Orange will claim that you have started a new contract and you will have lots of hassle trying to stop them taking your money.

Sounds like a great deal with ZEN. I don't think that most IP's would provide a free upgrade to a higher speed.
Also anyone that you deal with can make whatever claim against you that they wish with respect to contractual obligations. It doesn't mean to say that the claim has any legal basis or is legally enforceable.

I totally agree - but it's still a pain to deal with. I think that anything that reduces someone's interaction with Orange "support" is worth doing
