Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Receiving ok though. Had this problem last week checked outlook settings look ok though. Problem disappeared Friday but now backtoday.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news Pluto an awful lot of us are getting the problem you are getting and
outlook cannot connect to server errors as well
ORANGE DONT SEEM TO CARE AS THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON WITH ME ANYWAY FOR 2 WEEKS AT LEAST
WHY WONT Orange EMAIL US THE CUSTOMERS AND ADMIT SOMETHING IS WRONG
Its not just you guys with PC's that are having problems, I run an Apple MAC and use a mail application called Thunderbird which is an excellent tool. Over the last couple of days I have not been able to send emails, i can receive them albeit very slowly but can't send them, all I get is an error message telling me to check my smtp settings which I have done numerous times. I rely on my broadband connection for my work and not being able to send and receive messages is a major problem. Does anyone know if there is a solution as Orange deny there is a problem when I called, well they always do don't they. Think its last chance saloon time for Orange now, I seem to remeber an old saying 'there's no such thing as a free lunch' how true that is !
COME ON Orange GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER THIS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH WE ARE NOT IDIOTS AND DO NOT DESERVE TO BE CONTIUALLY FOBBED OFF !

Advice please
...Well hello and join the club ..I have had this problem on and off for many weeks but two things I do know ....it is not my\your fault and it is not happening exclusively with the dreaded "ORANGE"
The only work around I have been able to come up with is to change the name of the outgoing mail server. there are at least four you can try.... smtp.orangehome.co.uk smtp.wanadoo.co.uk smtp.freeserve.com or even smtp.freeserve.net these all work sometimes........you can usually find one which will send your emails.
The one I have had most success with of late (last 7 days has been faultless..touching wood here ) is simply smtp.orange.co.uk
I don't bother to change the incoming mail as this has never been a problem and is at the moment set to pop.wanadoo.co.uk
EVENTUALLY someone will find out the real cause but meanwhile.......keep smiling.........

Hi,
I'm still having problems. Sent an e-mail to their support people. They took 3 days to come up with a useless response. Here is the e-mail I have sent back to them:
Hi,
I am afraid that neither of your suggestions is relevant.
I already told you that RECEIVING e-mails is not a problem, SENDING e-mails is. So the first FAQ that says:
Where both SENDING and RECEIVING issues are experienced at the same time
is obviously not relevant.
The second FAQ tells me how to fix a profile that may have been corrupted. This too is irrelevant as mine is perfectly OK.
I would suggest that if other customers complain about not being able to send e-mails, while having no problems receiving them that you give them the following (USEFUL) advice:
-------------------------------------------------------
Ths problem is caused by our SMTP servers being overloaded. It has been happening since Christmas and hundreds of people have complained, but Orange is unwilling to do anything about it.
If you are using Outlook Express I suggest that you edit your "account" settings as follows:
o Go to Tools->Accounts...
o Open the "Mail" tab
o Select your "default" account name
o Click on "Properties"
o Open the "Servers" tab
o Edit the "Outgoing mail (SMTP)" entry to one of the following
smtp.orangehome.co.uk
smtp.wanadoo.co.uk
smtp.freeserve.co.uk
smtp.fsnet.co.uk
You may have to try each one in turn, but eventually you may be able to send emails for a few hours before the new server becomes overloaded. Then you can go through the same procedure all over again to try to get one that will work. Orange values your custom - have a nice day.
-------------------------------------------------------

Just to add weight to this stream, I have also had intermittent problems for several weeks sending emails too. I have too found it difficult to get any sense from Orange's technical support as their scripts are all geared up around there being a problem at the customer end, not at theirs.
I'm pretty confident too that it's not PC related as my daughter had the problem as well the first time she used email with a brand new laptop.
One thing I have found is that once you do have a connection to send, then it stays working until either you close OE or turn off the PC completely. So if you leave OE open (or minimised) and then put the PC in standby, it still sends when you turn it back on. Not very green, but worth doing if you want a guarantee that the email sending will work next time.
For the past week I've been unable to send emails. Get the same error message as everyone else. Have tried switching from port 25 to port 587 and other smtp.... combinations but no luck. I know from bitter experience it is a complete waste of time calling Orange because after been told "I can certainly help you with that ma'am" I will be given some rubbish about how my email boxes are corrupted and that I need to delete all my emails and then miraculously it will be all be fixed.
Over the past few months email has become unusable with so many connection problems, Help is useless and tell me if you can log onto Webmail fine then it is a problem with my Outlook Express not their problem. Final straw came when Broadband when down for over a week with no sign of being fixed. Am switching to Virgin and hope to get a better service (though probably won't I know). Meanwhile still can't send emails through Outlook Express! God bless you Orange.
Have just had the reply below from Orange customer services. Hopefully , like a alcoholic, admitting that they have a problem is the first step to dealing with it.......
... won't hold my breath though !
Thank you for your email.
We are having problem with some customers using there e-mail through
outlook express and other e-mail programs, we are looking in to this
issue and hope to have it resolved as soon as possible. Untill the
problem has been fixed i suggest you access your e-mail through the
orange homepage as that is not affected by the problem.

Advice please
No solution I'm afraid but at least I know I am not alone as I keep getting an identical message. Sometimes it finds the server but gets no response. have spent Three days messing about - I assumed that something had got screwed up in the software/settings but they all appear OK. Occasionally it will send emails - more often not and the whole Orange system is getting slower and slower.
I am yet another Orange customer (previously Wanadoo, Freeserve) recently having annoyingly intermittent problems sending emails.
Until they sort it out, I just want to point out for anyone who's not aware:
1. To send emails, one very slow but foolproof way is to go to website www.orange.co.uk click "Email & communicate" (sic) and put in your email address and password ... this is called web-based email.
2. BBC Radio 4 "You and Yours" today 23.5.07 had a feature criticising Orange broadband - it seems they are not coping with the amount of business they have taken on, obviously bad publicity for them. Let's hope the pressure gets to them ... add your complaint to Orange's Inbox they've got to sort it out.
_________________ Still insisting on my right to keep completely unlimited download limit I have argued succesfully against every revision of my contract since the days of Freeserve. I pay £27.99 a month for 512k speed but NO limits NO "fair use" clauses ...
Just an update... I've still been unable to send e-mails recently. Following advice above I changed smtp address removing wanadoo and inserting orangehome and the e-mail in my outbox which I couldn't send 20 minutes ago is on its way..
Whether this is a long term cure will shall see. For info this is a 8MB connection..

On Orange advice, I also changed smtp several times and it worked for a short while then failed so I sent the following email back to Orange :
"Done that........works for a short time, then I have to change it back
again for it to work again for a short time, then I change it back again

the picture ?.......do you think it might be a server problem at your
end perhaps ?

They had the audacity to reply with their help page link:
"how to delete and create mail profiles in Outlook Express
Article ID: kb77
Your mail profile holds the information that Outlook Express needs to connect to Orange and download your emails. Sometimes you may find that your mail profile has become corrupt, possibly because of a virus or SPAM attack. If you find there is a problem with your mail profile, often the thing to do is delete it and create a new one."
As you are using outlook to access emails, we can only help you reset
the mail profile settings, though we do not provide technical assistance
on the same.
Kindly contact your supplier regarding the matter.
