When I first got broadband I signed up to freeserve, which was OK, not long after that, they were bought out by Wanadoo, and at that point I seemed to have the most reliable internet connection, of course after a few years with them, good old Orange decided to buy them out, and it is now that I am having problems.
Let me get this straight, I have never liked Orange, I was unfortunate enough to join them via a mobile phone contract a couple of years ago. To begin with they we charging me an extortionate amount for my phone bill - £20 per month and all I got was 60 minutes and 60 texts! Then, they started charging me about £40 a month, claiming I had used loads of other minutes, texts and internet time!
They persisted in over charging me for 3 months, until I managed to hound customer services so much, that they admitted they had made a mistake, eventually they said that out of 'GOODWILL' they would forget about those charges, and reimburse me. So they did, and I said I wanted to cancel my contract with them prematurely- that cost me about 60 quid as well.
Eventually I got away from Orange, although they kept sending me bills for menial amounts of money - £10, £8.50 etc. for months afterwards, I refused to pay them, and they shut up and buggered off.
It was to my dread, that I received a letter several months ago informing me that 'your lovely wanadoo broadband service was to be transferred to the superb Orange broadband service.'
I let it happen - foolishly. They gave me a free upgrade to 8 meg broadband. So I wasn't complaining. However, NEVER have I EVER seen my connection speed hit above about 4 meg broadband. And at the beginning of May, problems really started,
For the last week, my internet connection with Orange has become painfully slow, so slow in fact that I feel dialup would be faster. When I download anything the speed never sees above 15 kbps, and I am losing my internet connection anywhere from 2 to 6 times a day, often waiting about 10 minutes at a time before anything reconnects. My router is very reliable, and new, it is a ZyXEL, however not even it can handle the sheer shoddiness of Orange broadband.
I am considering quitting Orange, unless calls to customer service will help, however judging from my previous experiences with Orange customer services, they don't.
So any suggestions that might fix my connection?
And if not - which broadband provider should I switch to.
I am having the exact same problem as you .I have 8 mb broadband (can get 6 in my area).Worked fine for ages, then a few weeks ago it all went wrong.
when i download something it doesn't go much above 15 kbps ,30kbps if i'm lucky. And my computer constantly disconnects.I don't know what Orange have done but its screwed my connection up.
Another bizarre thing that has happended is i can now hear the modem on the phone.I borrowed a filter of one of mates incase it was that but it still does it,this never used to happen. Also when i pick the phone up it sometimes makes the internet disconnect.
orange reckon they are working on my connection and told me to give them 48 hours.
i have taken all phones out of the sockets and just had my modem plugged straight into the wall socket through a filter.then tried 2 different phones.
I have had broadband for about 5 years and never had a problem with the phones and modems interfering.
More bizarre.Between 5 and 6pm my adsl light keeps going off then comes back on again,so i have to reconnect. It disconnects constantly between this time of day ,more than other times.
noise margin downstream: 6 db
attenuation downstream: 43 db
If this is not what you wanted then maybe you could show me how to get the correct info?
Those are the useful bits but it doesn't paint the whole picture as it depends on what downstream speed is established at the time. One thing it does show is that it should have established the fastest speed it could as the margin is at it's lowest limit so it wouldn't be able to push the speed any higher.
I don't know ZyXEL routers at all but it should give a downstream speed somewhere. There ought to be a status page, or maybe it's in the page(s) info for the connection/username and password.
Ray, that definitely sounds like a fault causing all the problems, you'll need to speak to Orange and ask for a line test to be put through, if it's not already been done. Probably want to be for an intermittant connection.
Just trying to refing this thread took about 5 disconnection/reconnections - and about 5 goes at reconnecting each time. Is it worth hassling BT about the line? its been worse since the landline had to be repaired - broadband was ok ish until landline fixed a few weeks ago - now a connection might last 2 seconds, 2 minutes or 2 hours (rarely...)
Any suggestions welcome
The post at the beginning could have been written by me,
my situation exactly!
I googled "orange problems" because I wasn't sure if my losing my connection was my pc or their fault and.. lo and behold!
I find myself without a connection many evenings when I really need to contact my study group wnhen we are working together, most frustrating, to say the least,
without mentioning missing bargain nursing books on ebay at the last minute
i dont need loads of download capacity, I just need an efficient, reliable service at least possible cost!'m a nursing student, and extremely poor,
so if anyone can recommend a suitable alternative I would be very grateful!
(surely I don't have a contract with Orange as I just got shipped over from wanadoo without upgrading anything??)
surely I don't have a contract with Orange as I just got shipped over from wanadoo without upgrading anything??
The minimum term of the original contract you agreed to still applies until it's up. They changed the terms and conditions to allow the changeover and it's long since the point you can refuse the changes.
However unless you've changed packages since the change to Orange then you're practically guaranteed not to be in contract as it's been about a week off a full year since it changed to Orange.
