Morning All,
After dropping to a new low of 256k download speed last night, I've had enough of this poor service. Given that I only "upgraded" a week ago, should I give Orange a bit more time or will I be fobbed off forever?
I think I'm going to ring Orange tonight and, unless they can give me a definite timescale for improvement of service, I'm going to downgrade my service back to the free 2meg broadband and then ask for my MAC code. I'm thinking of going to Waitrose as they get good feedback scores and they take LLU MAC codes.

Don't give Orange any more time, you will be fobbed off forever. You can't have had many dealings with them if you think that they will a) give you a definite timescale for improvement of service or b) stick to any timetable they do give you or c) acknowledge in any subsequent conversation that they may ever have given you any sort of indication of a timescale. The people who answer the phones know nothing and barely speak comprehensible English. Get your MAC code and migrate - I migrated to Waitrose without any difficulty . . . . apart from Orange then 'forgetting' to cancel my account as they should do automatically once the MAC code has been used by the new ISP. They are either unbelievably incompetent, downright dishonest or both. The sooner you are rid of them the happier you will be.

dont bother hanging around. migrate as soon as you can - you will be fobbed off indefinitely.

Hi Sara,
Are you happy with the service and speeds you are getting from Waitrose?
Also, did you have any downtime when passing from Orange to Waitrose?

Thanks, mate. Just an update, I've downgraded my broadband account to 2meg, not that it makes a difference, because 2meg is the fastest I've ever got. Ok, it means a new 12 month contract, but it's free due to my mobile package, so paying the contract up is not an issue. I'll send back my livebox and get my MAC (unless by some miracle, orange sort their act out) and off I go, probably to Waitrose or BT. End of my mobile contract and it's bye-bye Orange forever.

Yes, upload and download speeds are consistently far better than those I was getting from Orange, even at peak times. Most important of all, the connection is completely stable and does not freeze or disconnect at random and frequent intervals as with Orange.
I think there was a very short period of downtime c. 2 hours overnight during the actual migration. Absolutely nothing significant.
Needless to say, Orange managed to cock up one or two things though. Firstly, their terms and conditions/code of practice make it quite clear that your Orange account should be closed automatically once the migration has taken place. I had to make a 25 min phone call to 'customer service' before mine was closed, and of course this conversation involved Orange (a) lying about the actual migration date and (b) attempting to blame BT and/or my new ISP for what was plainly their own fault. Secondly, they've sent me two return postage packages for sending back the Livebox, the second one sent out after they should have received the Livebox which I sent back promptly in the first package.
What a relief to get away this bunch of amateurs!!
Having been with Freeserve/Wanadoo for the last 9 years with absolutely no problems whatsoever, Orange upgraded my broadband line (LLU) to 8 mb from 2 mb without any prior notification in November last. They also managed to disconnect my BT phone line at the same time.
Ever since this upgrade, my broadband connection has been dropping, always late afternoon/evenings, every day, slow download speeds, e-mails not being delivered or can’t be sent etc.
All contact with the Indian call centres has been met with useless technical support and constant repeating back to me of the problem. They tried to get me to accept a Livebox but this would have tied me in for another year. A big no no !!.
I have been monitoring the problems on this site ever since, thinking that it was just me and my equipment, but no, there are thousands out there with similar problems.
They also wouldn’t issue a deadlock letter as they were “working to resolve” the problem. Well enough was enough. I got my MAC code within 3 days and transferred to Waitrose. Transfer was completed in about 8 days. The result now, no disconnections, better download speeds, free technical support, all profits to a nominated charity but the big bonus is not having to speak to those dozy technical support staff in India. This only goes to prove that Orange equipment is at fault. The only difference is that I have now is an Ethernet modem supplied by Waitrose rather than USB. I also signed up with Google mail, which is a huge improvement on Orange’s.
My advice to Orange, is to get out of Broadband and stick with mobile phone coverage only - although I have no intention of trying that !!
I would suggest to everyone else. Ring up and get a MAC code now (they have to supply one within 5 working days) even if your are in dispute and send this abysmal company down the pan !!
Thinking of switching to Waitrose too... what happens to the email address (mine's a freeserve.co.uk) - is there any way to keep this and/or forward email?

I can't speak for Orange, but I used to have Tiscali as my isp and I still have tiscali e-mail addresses which I use for people I don't like or when there's a risk of spam/junkmail and I access them regularly. not sure about forwarding, I think it can be done.
I mainly use googlemail, it avoids these problems.

It'll run for a certain length of time before suspending as you're not dialing into Orange, shortly after it gets deleted. You can retrieve it through the website though so you could keep it going for quite sometime.

Mine was Freeserve and I opened a Google mail account before I swopped ISP. If you have Outlook Express you need to set up a new account within "Tools" and follow the instructions on the Google site to operate the e-mail account. Obviously you will not be able to send Freeserve/Orange e-mails via Outlook Express only through Orange's homepage. I have my Freeserve/Wanadoo and Google accounts now downloading to O E but send via Google servers.
I have told everyone to start using the Google address.
Brilliant, thanks for the advice everyone. Great news that you can still get to email thru the Orange website during the transition to the new address.
Yesterday I asked Waitrose this question and they got back to me, with a proper reply, within 30 minutes (and I'm not even a customer!) - here's what they said:
"With regards to your query, please note that you will be able to keep your original email address which you will be able to access via your Waitrose Broadband, provided that your current ISP allows you to do so."
So there is a dim possibility that Orange fall into that category. However I can't find any evidence for this on their help pages. Last night I tried to phone the Orange helpdesk to ask them and... well, you don't me to tell you what happened next...

UPDATE - Sent my livebox back to Orange yesterday and rang them today to get my MAC. Guy in the "Care" team tried to persuade me to go back to Tech support and they would look at my line to see if they could get me up to the full 2meg my line would support. (I live 0.5 miles from the exchange). I explained that I had already spoken to tech support on a number of occasions and that I had spoken to other Orange broadband users and that I thought the service was a dead loss. Should have my MAC in 3-5 days, no charge involved as I'm on free broadband, I know I'm now going to have to pay someone for broadband, but it'll be worth it for a decent service.
