I have been with Wanadoo Broadband for some time, putting up with poor connections and constant dropping of connections.
About a month ago I noticed the connection speed was slower but connection more stable. I also noticed my emails failed to send.
After some frustration I noticed a pattern and found that if I changed the SMTP address in email settings as below it then sent the email. Then I realised that Orange had changed their system and it was connecting me to different servers on their system each time I logged on, this explained the differing speeds and differing ability to send email when the smtp address changed:-
Connection Speed .............. Change Outgoing Mail Server to
connected above 1.1 Mbps - --- smtp.wanadoo.co.uk
connected at 1.0 Mbps - -- smtp.freeserve.co.uk or smtp.fsnet.co.uk
this ensured the email would send when connected on the respective server and may help others who are having trouble sending email intermittantly.
As a workaround for the above,so I didn't need to change SMTP settings all the time, I decided to send my email via a 3rd party's servers who already host my email.( I use madasafish/Freenetname ) This involved setting the SMTP address to their address (smtpmail.madasafish.co.uk), Ticking "My Server Requires Authentication" under Outgoing Email
and under "Advanced" setting the outgoing mail port number to 587 (this allows the outgoing mail to bypass Orange/wanadoo servers.
At the same time as the above, I complained to the Helldesk and they reluctantly admitted this (after blaming my settings and a long argument). They have since ensured I am connected at 2.1 mbps but this now disconnects all the time. so, what is new ???
