hi everyone after having problems sending emails and reading various posts about it , i came across a post by stoppy in which avg seemed to have disabled smtp , having looked in my avg 7.5 ( free version ) i managed to solve my problem and activated smtp and can now send emails. if you have avg and are experiencing these problems double click avg icon in system tray at bottom right of screen, scroll down to email scanner and click, under that you will see email scanner is fully functional with properties box, click that box and properties page will popup with plugin and general options showing. now click properties on plugin section and go to servers, you will see pop3 and smpt host auto matic, pop3 server status will show ACTIVE at bottom of highlighted server properties, click smtp under pop3 and it will either state ACTIVE as in pop3 or DISABLED , if disabled click modify on the right and at the bottom is a box activate this server and use for sending/recieving email, click the box and a right tick will show . lastly click ok on all popup pages until main avg screen is all that is showing, then close or minimise it. now try and send your email. hope it helps some of you

Usually that wouldn't effect it it just disables virus scanning of outgoing emails not your smtp server, avg has smtp disabled as default as most people are more concerned about scanning incoming emails than outgoing.

hi steve i understand your statement but having tried many times resolving this issue it was one last throw of the dice and worked straight away, i remember having problems recieving and sending while using norton internet security couple years back, eventually got rid of it and used avast, low and behold outlook xpress came back to life. having being with freeserve wanadoo, orange are awful as have had probs in the past with connecting and various other issues , a change in isp in near future is what im considering as excuses from cust services are nearly as bad as the problems we as customers are having to put up with, orange should be TANGO'ED

Its good it worked keep an eye on it.
I know what you mean about Orange i was also with them when it was Freeserve but noticed a difference when they changed name to Orange from Wanadoo i left last august and they made it as awkward as possible for me to leave long story but ISPA got my MAC off them in the end as usual the lack of service and problems was my pc as they put it well im no expert but i know when someones talking crap all problems disappeared as soon as i left i just gets me angry they way they seem to get away with it and seeing all these people being fobbed off its disgraceful.
I stopped using my Freeserve email address long before it left was totally useless mind you the spam in the hundreds seem to get thru ok lol.
