On the 1st May I was upgraded as follows
Thanks for asking us to change your BB Max - £27.99 broadband service to the RETENTION BB Plus - £9.99 package.
DownStream Connection Speed was previously 1100 kbps
The upgrade happened yesterday, was initially on
DownStream Connection Speed 6208 kbps
Today I am on
DownStream Connection Speed 6400 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6400 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 30.5 db 15.0 db
Noise Margin 7.2 db 17.0 db
No packet collisions
I have an MTU size of 1492
However my speedtest results at various points in the day have typically been identical to what they were just prior to the upgrade
Although if you look at my history now, I've just managed 2MB speed LOL
I have done various tests at different times of the day - all very similar to the above which is what I was on before, and on a different IP address. (The full history doesn't show above as I rebooted the router to get a new IP address).
I suppose I should be grateful my speed has gone up slightly without losing my connection, so well done so far Orange
Ok as the connection altered yesterday you'll be within the 10 day training period. Speeds can and often do vary somewhat during this time.
You've been put onto ADSL Max and there's another piece of the puzzle which is quite important to know. The IP Profile is a setting a BT system puts on your connection to limit it's speed in order to maintain stability, prevent disconnections, etc. Go to the address below and run a test and it'll tell you your profile. As long as your connection is stable the profile should automatically go up in 3 days.
If you want or need to turn off your router try to do it at most once a day for a reasonable period, over 15 minutes when you do. Tactics to try and prevent the system is unstable and disconnecting all the time.
Oh and the cable and wireless stuff is normal, they're used by Orange as a backend service and sometimes show like that on speedtests etc.
Although it's hard to compare my speed compared to what it was (as I hadn't used that tester until now), the results seem to be more realistic compared to speedtest.net (which I know isn't 100% reliable) My browsing speed does seems consistent with what the BT checker is saying rather than my synch speed, so thanks a lot for that
Today
DownStream Connection Speed 5696 kbps
But my effective speed has now gone up to well overr 3000 kbps.
I think the BT speed checker can only work with a max profile of 5000 cos I get this message every time I run the test
The Performance Tester is now testing Broadband connection. Your configured download throughput speed for this service is 5000 k
And to correctly aswer elhana's question, the IP profile. I think this is what you wanted to see
IP profile for your line is - 5000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 5696 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 4601 kbps
My previous profile wasn't 2200, but things have speeded up here.
Even my 7 yr old was complaining that things had slowed down, but has noticed things picl up today
It won't have been as there isn't a 2200 profile on max. It varys in jumps of 500 between 500 and 7000. It's completely normal for the speed to act up a bit in the first 10 days, thats what it's there for but hopefully it's now settled down for you.
Just so you know it probably won't go up any higher, a 6000 profile needs a sync speed of higher than 6818.
Yes I did readi the kitz "how maxDSL works" after being puzzled by my IP profile
I was a bit concerned when my synch speed was increased from 6208 to 6240, but my download speeds were still less than 500 kpbs, that by turning my router off (for about 10-15 mins) and on again that this has set the maximum threshold. However from looking at the table, I guess the worst case if it has done this is that my max speed will be set to 5Mbps rather than 5.5 Mbps which is no big deal
I assume in the beginning that my IP profile hadn't been updated from the old 1MB speed even though my synch speed had
