I've been monitoring when my connection goes down and it only seems to be when it's left idle.
If i manage to switch the router off a few times and get it working, and carry on using it, it wont' cut me off. It's never cut me off when i've been using it, only when i've left it for about 2 minutes onwards it cuts itself off.
I couldn't see any IDLE settings in the router config though. What happens by the way, is that the 'Internet' LED goes off, then the DSL. Sometimes all lights apart from the Power LED go off, which is mental.
I also tried my old Speedtouch USB modem, which seemed to work fine apart from once where it couldn't initalise the line. I'm completly unsure on if it's the line or the router????
Any Ideas?
Just wanna say cheers to everyone for sharing their opinions and ideas. Been really helpful.
I'm using a speedtouch 580. Everything used to be fine till a couple weeks ago. I got a new PC and since then it's started doing this. I can't imagine it's the PC though, as a wireless router should work fine without the ethernet plugged in shouldn't it.

Being wirelessly connected shouldn't effect your actual internet connection if anything it would only effect the wireless connection from the pc to the router.
When you got your new pc did you reconfigure the router ? have you got the latest firmware installed?
Does it do it via ethernet connection with your new pc?

The connection to the new PC is via ethernet cable. Yes the computer recognised it fine, and i updated to the lastest firmware. As far as i can remember the connection worked perfectly for the first few days then it started going wrong, which is wha made me think it's nothing to do with the PC.
The Ethernet light is nearly always on, as it the WLAN, it's the DSL and Interent lights which go off and the connection no longer works.
I've tried unplugging the router from the etherent and the connection still goes down(i have an Xbox360 and Wii which use it wirelessly, so i can test it without using a pc)
Thanks for you help people. Well last night, it cut off at 10pm, came back on at 10.30 after i ran a setup again. It then went off at 11pm again. And then it was on and off till i went bed. I just had another dropout just now, but it then came back straight away. It's crap basically, how can i rely on it.
Orange are in the process of upgrading local exchanges. mine was down saturday and sunday.
all they need to do is communicate that on the main web of their website, but they choose not to.

Yes it sounds like there is no problem at your end as your network is fine seems its your line and more likely Orange so if i was you i wouldnt change anything at your end.

Really??? Mine was down pretty much all Saturday and Sunday.
But it was also down Mon,Tues,Weds,Thurs, Fri after 10.30pm(not sure during the day as i'm at work). Could all this downtime be blamed on the updating then? They never mentioned it when i phoned them.

here's a response i got via email:
"We would also like to inform you that currently, there is some emergency
maintenance work in progress on the Broadband LLU network that will
cause some customers to lose service on the 28/04/2007 and on
29/04/2007."
now have a look at this thread , where people are reporting big speed increases - which tells me that they putting in their own equipment in local exchanges...
why they dont say any of this on the MAIN page of their website is beyond me. their communications about this are pathetic. all it takes is just a series of announcements via email or posted on their site.
Oh right. Still unsure on what to do then. I don't want to leave Orange if it doesn't solve my problem! Yet i don't want to buy a new router if it isn't that!
Grr dilemma galore!

Most people that have moved on from Orange their problems have disappeared including my own as Orange are not interested in solving them, it seems like ur router is fine.
Regards

Hi joel
In my opinion Be* is reliable good speeds free support if your lines not too long but email isn't included thats £2pm extra for 5 addresses and webspace 3 month contract.
IDNet is also good free support and unlimited email addresses 1 month contract.
After being with Orange ide never go with an ISP with a 12 month contract again.
