I'm trying to help my parents set up a wireless network and am having a couple of issues
1) I've run through the full installation and when connected (rarely) the signal strength is excellant. However it only connects 2 in 10 times. The PC can pick up the neighbour's wireless signal, but not the livebox. My Dad has figured out the only way is to constantly reboot his PC !!
Is this s livebox, line or PC problem ?
2) Is there anyway to stop the PC from automatically connecting to the internet as by Dad has asked that he clicks a like to connect rather than it all happen on boot up ?
3) I have a Belkin G Wirless Adapter (Part # F5D7050) connected to my mother's PC but when trying to connect to the internet, belkins utilitiy seems to 'fight' with windows to monitor the connection causing drop offs and conflicts.
I've tried disabling the setting on the Belkin utility but it won't save and everytime the PC is rebooted - it forgets that it was disabled !! However the utility doesn't pickup the signal from the modem, whereas the windows utility does - go figure !
I've tried uninstalling, but that uninstalls the device as well ? Any suggestions ?
Orange help has been an experience ! And they are sending out a CD and a wire (I think) to see if the livebox itself is the issue.
Interested to hear if anyone else has an opinion ?
Hi Nyanko,
Let me first sympathise with you! Secondly I am only semi computer literate but have had a similar incident to yours which was solved tonight - so excuse me if it seems obvious!!
I had been trying to connect a laptop wirelessly with a belkin adapter too, managed (fluked) to get it connected once, but wouldn't connect to the net and from then on I got nothing at all either in the Belkin utility window or via Windows.
Rang support expecting an hour or two on the phone - this is what he said to do.
On the computer that is to be connected wirelessly - first press 1 on live box to pair.
Click on internet explorer - should have cannot be displayed.
Click on file
Un-tick work offline
Refresh page and hopefully hey presto!!
Bear in mind that I had no connection whatsoever showing anywhere before this, it just connected straight away.
This is all on xp too.
Hope this helps you
Dan
Do you have to do that each time you connect or does it work from then on ? Unfortunately my parents are very PC illiterate and I need to make this as fool proof as I can !!!

UNABLE TO CONNECT WITH WIRELESS:
Are you pressing Button 1 on Livebox to put it into pairing mode?
Press Button 1 on Livebox so the wifi light flashes. This puts livebox into pairing mode and you have 10 minutes to try and connect your wireless device . This only needs to be done once and then you should be able to connect every time .
I had to change security on Livebox to WEP only.
WEP key is case sensitive.
If security is an issue WPA is more secure, try WPA only.
You could also try Changing the channel. One recommended to try is channel 9.
Another issue is if there are 2 programmes on the computer that you are trying to connect trying to control the wireless. Turn of the programme that came with the wireless card and use XP to control the connection.

That in itself would suggest a PC problem as simply rebooting shouldn't effect the livebox in any way.

I believe so. In the available wireless networks list your livebox should be listed with automatic next to it. If you choose it and disconnect it should set it to manual meaning you have to tell it to connect when you want it.

Depends on the software and drivers setup but you may be able to get around that.
Uninstall the adapter, take it out and put it's install cd in, if it autoruns just exit and don't let it install anything.
Plug in the adapter and windows should bring up a found new hardware wizard, just next/ok/continure your way through it and it should get the drivers it needs from the cd without the software. Then just use windows to run the wireless. This can often be done with many adapters to get around their software.
