I am a new Orange broadband customer (since Friday) and can't fault Orange on the speed with which they activated the line & sent out my livebox. However, the praise seems to end there, for now at least!
I am having trouble determining the situation with my connection, I signed up for 8Meg unlimited broadband. My line stats from the livebox are:
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 10.4
Attenuation (dB) : 23.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 9472
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 8128 448
whih to my fairly untrained eye looks good, should be a nice fast connection only being 1.3km from the exchange, but it's not. My down speeds vary from 300kbps to a maximum of around 2000kbps. Upload speeds are around 350kbps. So off to BT's official speedtest site and this tells me:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1735 kbps
so it would appear that my line will support 8Meg but it's capped at 2Meg is this correct? Am I also correct in thinking that the IP profile of the line won't change over the "10 days of testing" and only the line sync speed will?
Another thing is I can't tell if I'm on LLU or ADSL MAX, according to this forum my upload speed suggests I'm on ADSL MAX, however, some line checkers suggest LLU, i.e. prodigy internet tells me:
Line speed capabilities
Rate adaptive (250k and 500k) : Green
Fixed Rate (1000k and 2000k) : Green
MAX speed (upto 8000k) : Green (6000 kbps)
250k, 500k, 1000k, 2000k and 6000k are all available on this line.
Line status
This line has a Shared Metalic Path Facility (SMPF) on it - either the broadband or phone service utilises an LLU service while BT provides the other service normally.
Current Service Provider : <Please login for this feature>
Exchange status
This exchange is fully enabled for rate adaptive (500k) ADSL, fully enabled for fixed rate (1000k and 2000k) ADSL, and fully enabled for Max ADSL (upto 8000k).
There are 3 DSLAMS in the LLANEDEYRN exchange
DSLAM name ADSL enabled SDSL enabled Daily port usage Spare ADSL ports Spare SDSL ports Short term available ports Long term available ports Available bandwidth (Mbps) In service date
LLD-DSL-001 Yes No 0 151-175 0 26-50 0 100-110 Now
LLD-MSAN-301 Yes No 2 151-175 0 501-525 0 100-110 Now
LLD_DSL_101 Yes No 0 6-10 0 0 0 70-80 Now
so, it would appear from this that I am on LLU, but every website I've been to says Orange LLU is not available on my exchange.
Also, my talk service is not enabled yet, I haven't recieved a number or anything (I should add that my official completion date was only yesterday, but I want to make sure they have no time/opportunity to mess me about. Pity I didn't see this forum 2 weeks ago!)

It is ADSL Max.
I would have thought you should gets speeds between 6 and 7.
During the 10 day training period leave the Livebox on - do not turn off - and you should see your "IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps " go up from 2000.

Thanks for the reply, how do you know it's adsl max though? I'd love to be certain it is!

This test does not work if it is LLU.
Keith
aah, I see, thanks Keith! Well, here I just hope the lift the 2 meg cap & activate talk soon.
As others have said so far it's definitely ADSL Max, a good connection with the maximum sync speed.
The IP profile is 2 meg but whats probably happened is it's "stuck" to that as you sync'd at the maximum speed. Normally it'll jump up providing the sync stays high for 3 days but during the first 10 this doesn't always happen. It may increase at some point during the time or not until the very end, possibly could even stay stuck there.
All this is fairly normal and a common part of inital ADSL Max connections.
Well, I emailed Orange and got a scripted response saying blah blah "upto 8 meg", emailed them again saying not to send me scripted replies and look at it properly, they replied quite rudely saying that 2Mb was all my line could support and that was that. I sent my final reply telling them that was total rubbish and either they sort it or give me a MAC code immediately and today they seem so have done what was needed

so well done to Orange, although it took a strong email to move their behind. Still waiting for talk though
ok, thats quite freaky, no sooner do I post here, but decide to reboot the livebox and hey presto, the talk service is enabled, so, for now, I'm a happy bunny.

To be honest it is highly unlikly anything was done and it was just ADSL Max settling in.
As I mentioned before, sounds like a pretty normal inital Max period.
