Hey guys,
Let me tell you a story...Once upon a time I bought a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop, as you do. It finally arrived and I couldn't wait to get it set up and connected to the internet (I get free internet by the name of Orange livebox so naturally, I wanted to take advantage of it). This is where the problems started. I live in a house with a bunch of flatmates so wireless seemed a good option at the time. They all set it up and connected wirelessly on their own laptops but did I? Did I f**k. That was one month ago. A pretty long time to set up a wireless connection I'm sure you would agree! And in that month, through many many calls to Orange, cups of tea and through the constant foul mouthed abuse (sometime physical) that my livebox has been subjected to, I finally managed to get connected with a wired connection and a wireless connection. However here is my problem...
I can only connect wirelessly when the security on my livebox is set to no security (configured via 192.168.1.1 as my livebox CD wouldnt work on laptop so had to do everything on windows manually but thats another story) where I am then able to access web pages. But when I turn on the security (WEP, WPA, WEP or WPA security) I cannot open or access any web pages even though my windows wireless network connection icon on bottom right corner of my laptop says connected with an "excellent signal" strength.
Orange seem to think the problem is with my inbuilt wireless and/or its software not allowing me to connect to a secure wireless network, and I have a sneaking suspicion they could be right, since Orange have talked me through everything they possibly can. I have also done a bit of research on the wireless I have inside my laptop and apparently there are some issues with it so I installed some updates for the wireless driver but they dont seem to work.
I know this might not be the right place for this topic since it seems to be a problem with my inbuilt wireless and not liveobx, but any help would really be appreciated!
For your info, I have inbuilt wireless on my laptop and the wireless thing is called Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection and windows manages my wireless connection instead of the default (by order of Orange).
I hope someone is able to help me sort this once and for all, before I take both my livebox and laptop outside, place them under my car, get into the car, start the car and drive over them! So for the sake of my beloved laptop, please guys, any help would be appreciated. I'm probably an expert with the livebox issues by now since iv been in constant contact with Orange so I will try help out with any problem you have with the livebox.
If you already are then not 100% sure but my dell laptop had the same issue until I followed the steps on the link.
Good Luck
P.S. remember to put the livebox in the connection mode by either rebooting or pressing the 1 button until the first light flashes (sorry I am not more specific but I don't use the live box any more)
Yep windows XP service pack 2. Dell originally controlled the wireless until Orange made me change it so that windows now controls my wireless connection.
Everything seems fine except I cant connect wirelessly when the wireless network on my livebox is secure, instead I can only connect wirelessly when it is set to no security. Pretty annoying to be honest. I'll check out that link and let you know if it solves anything.
Have you tried resetting the wireless device on your laptop ?
This can be done by following these steps :-
1. On the PC you need to click 'start', 'run' and type in "services.msc" without quotes.
2. Scroll down to wireless connection and right click it.
3. Click "stop" then "start"
4. Then right Click it again and click 'restart'
5. Close the window
Then try to connect to the Livebox with one of the security settings (WPA is best), but do not chose both WPA and WEP as newer machines do not like this setting.
Amazing grace...I followed your instructions and although that didnt solve the actual problem, it lead me right to the problem and I managed to work out what was causing the connection not being able to connect to a secure wireless network. So thanks a lot dude you'v saved my sanity and the lives of my laptop and livebox!
The problem was simple, and quite embarrassing really, but it turns out that the WEP key on the livebox was different to the WEP key I have been using for my wireless connection! Unbeliveable, my flatmate wrote down the WEP key for me after he set up his wireless and I read a digit wrong, I typed a zero (0) when it should have been a D (bloody looked like a 0 to me i'm gona * my flatmate!) but it just goes to show you how easy it is to make a simple mistake that wont allow you to connect wirelessly, especially since I'm a perfectionist and always triple check things like that, so I would urge anyone having problems to ensure that the WEP kep on your livebox matches the WEP kep you use for your wireless connection no matter how confident you are that it is the correct key.
Anyways I'm just glad iv finally solved the problem, I'm gona go out and have a cheeky beer or Three to celebrate!
I'll still be looking into this forum now and again anyways incase anyone else has any problems similar to those that I have encountered and I'll try my best to help.
