Thanks to this site, I have found out more tonight than in countless calls to Orange.
However, I am not at all knowledgeable on this subject.
Could someone tell me if this:
Local loop unbundling presence
Be: Enabled
Bulldog: Enabled
Carphone Warehouse / TalkTalk: RFS date set (Date unknown)
Easynet / Sky: Enabled
Edge Telecom: Not available
HomeChoice: Not available
Lumison: Not available
Node4: Not available
Orange: Not available
Pipex: Enabled
Tiscali: Enabled
WB Internet: Not available
Zen Internet: Not available
Means that I effectively will never have what I am paying for until the exchange is enabled?

Assuming the information is upto date, not always the case, then this means that Orange does not have their dreaded LLU equipment installed at this exchange and that you will effectively be on ADSLMax which is much better.
Without seeing your line stats it is very difficult to comment on what you have and may be able to achieve. If you have a Livebox then Open Internet Explorer and type 192.168.1.1/testinfo.html into the adress bar. Keep pressing enter and it will come up with a load of results. Copy from where the second half of the results start and post back here. As an indication, the second part line results start where it says ADSL_VERSION
Here you go. The results appeared immediately.
I was offline for 12 days. Came back up yesterday but at 0.5 MEG.
Previously, and on the odd occasion that it was working, I was getting anything up to 4.5 MEG (rare) as low as 1.0, and an average of 3.5.
This 0.5 connection I am using now is very stable. The previous was very wobbly and I would get up to ten drop-outs a night.
Anyway, here are the results:
ADSL_ATTAINABLE is the maximum sync rate that your livebox may achieve if Orange did services beyond 8128. This figure of 8128 being the maximum sync rate on ADSLMax.
ADSL_NOISE_MARGIN This is your downstrean noise margin from exchange to you. At present it is very good but then to be expected given the service your on. More on this below.
ADSL_DOWNSTREAM This indicates a fixed half meg service so you are not on ADSLMax but on a fixed rate service. Your upstream of 288 would also further substantiate this.
DOWNSTREAM_ATTENUATION This indicates the amount of loss of the line and you appear to be somewhere between 3 to 4 Kms from your exchange.
ADSL_TYPE This will normally indicate a reading of Fast or Interleave. It is by default set to auto at the echange which equates to Fast (No Interleave). If their are stabilty problems the exchange equipment will alter it to switch Interleave on. Interleave has the effect of stabilising the line but at the expense of a reduced download speed.
The Upstream attenuation and noise figures can normally be ignored as they tend not to be as critical as the downstream figures.
So, you appear to be on a fixed half meg ADSL service. However, I am basing this on the fact that you have a downstream rate of 576 and upstream rate of 288 which are exactly the rates for an ADSL half meg fixed service. It is remotely possible, but doubtful, that you could be on LLU which has set your line to the exact downstrean rate of ADSL half meg service. The upstream for both ADSL and LLU is normally the same at 288. You could ask Orange whether you are on ADSL or LLU to be doubly sure.
Your line will support ADSLMax. The actual ADSL_DOWNSTREAM (sync rate) you get will be something upto 8128. If you were on ADSLMax I can not see getting the maximum sync rate, probably somewhere between 7000 and 8128.
What I do find confusing is the figure you gave of 4.5meg. This would indicate that at some point you were on ADSLMax and not a fixed rate service.
Thanks for the info.
I actually got a call from Orange today! And at the time promised! I had to lie down for a while afterwards.
They told me I am on IP Stream Max, whatever that means. She didn't know. Is it another name for ADSLMax?
I am sure this 0.5 MEG connection is 'different' BB to what I had before it went down on 15th of March as it is very stable and constant.
The previous connection fluctuated dramatically.
The 4.5 MEG reading was a rarity. I once spent all night doing speed tests and in around 50 tests the average was around 3.5. At that time, and I'm going from memory so could be wrong, the actual maximum according to BT was 3.5 MEG. I have seen it operating at 4.5 though.
Interesting that my attainable is up to 9.5 now, when IP Stream Max offers a maximum of 8 MEG.
I am around 3km from the exchange as the crow flies, 3.4km by road.
It has only just occurred to me that the name of my exchange is a place about 10-12km from me, which I thought was the initial problem. Google Maps tells me otherwise and I am definitely on the closest exchange to me, albeit with a completely misleading name.
Ho hum. Anyway, the lovely lady promised that a Technical Support Supervisor will be calling me "Hopefully today". Can't wait.....

IpStream Max and ADSLMax is one of the same and I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that you aint on this. Your on a fixed half meg service. Fixed service upstream whether it be half, one or two meg is always 288. ADSLMax upstream is above 288 and upto 448. This is how you can normally tell the difference if your not sure. So from what you stats say what do you think? Heres are my stats and you will see what I mean:
I think the comment in your previous reply 'They told me I am on IP Stream Max, whatever that means. She didn't know.' says it all. You'd think they would know what service you are on.
Yes, you would, but then this is Orange we are talking about.
I spoke to BT tonight (they rang me Three minutes after I registered a 'fault') and they told me that my equipment is perfectly adequate for ADSLMax/IP Stream Max. This includes the internal house wiring, the BT socket and my line to the exchange.
No call so far from the Techie Supervisor.....
I think I'll ring them tomorrow, ask for a MAC code and bugger off to Be.
