Hi all,
I am having the same problems as everyone else here but can someone please explain something for me?
Having spent another half hour on the phone this evening i decided to put my old speedtouch modem back on and the icon in the tool bar is saying my speed is 1.3Mbps but the speed tests i have done on DSL Zone UK still say my down is 128 kbps and my up is 380kbps. Can someone please explain what this means as i am getting so confused now having spent 3 years happily on 1meg with wanadoo and now having all sorts of problems since Orange sent me a livebox as compensation for not upgrading me as they promised me over a year ago?!
Any advice would be welcome and thanks
I`m no expert but the speed that pops up when your modem connects is the speed your line should be able to take , BUT with Orange this is not the speed you get as you can tell by your speed tests
If your upstream speed reported 380 as indicated then you appear to be on ADSLMax. Posting your line stats will give a better picture of whats happening. With the livebox, open Internet Explorer and type in 192.168.1.1/testinfo.html Copy and paste second half of results from where they start ADSL_VERSION back here and someone will advise.
Thanks tvman here is what i found but not sure what the difference is hope someone can shed some light, as i have tried several speed test sites and they all come out as about 130 Kbps downstream, cheers
Ok from those stats your line is pretty long, connected at 1760kbps meaning a maximum profile of 1.5meg. Interleave is on suggesting instability, margin is high also suggesting it's been increased to try and maintain stability as well.
Is the speed mentioned bits or bytes? If it's bytes then it's not too bad as it means it's downloading at pretty much 1 meg, meaning the profile isn't that far off it's maximum.
Next thing needed is your ip profile which you can get from a speedtest...
http://speedtester.BT.com/
After that monitor your attenuation, noise margin and downstream stats along with profile for a few days to see if there's any changes. Upstream stuff is largely unimportant as thats usually less effected than downstream speeds.
Hi Elhana and thanks for your reply.
Tried the speedtest you suggested which gave an error message but have been using http://www.speedtest.net but am not sure what your looking for from the speed test so i put this from my latest one http://www.speedtest.net/resul...131410.png
i am constantly getting a download of 130 kilo bits not bytes my latency is between 40 and 90ms and up is constant around 380
I am 3.1 miles away from the exchange. Do I keep an eye on the attenuation and noise from the stats from the livebox? and can anything be done about Interleave or not?
I have been promised faithfully two days running by the same woman from Orange c/s that she would call me with news but alas nothing she has also said i would get a month free and a refund for the small fortune in phone calls.
Hope you can give me some more advise as that is 10 times what i have had for the last month
Cheers
Ahh just got result from speedtester which is :

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 152 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 1760 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 120 kbps
Bearing in mind I have had no probs at 1 meg with the old speedtouch and am now told my line will support 2meg plus so said BT Hope you can shed some light
Thanks again

Well there's the problem, the profile is set to 152kbps, it means no matter how fast the line is running at the time the system is limiting the connection to that speed. As with interleave it's done to try and maintain stability automatically.
Really if your margin and downstream sync speeds stay high for 3 days it should raise the profile up automatically. Right now it's a matter of monitoring it and/or getting Orange to do a line check for a speed issue to see what's going on.
Well thank you for the information, I have several line tests which they never seem to know about the next time I ring up. is there nothing I can physically do or is it down to them. My speed went down to 512 then to 200 and has now steadied out at 130.
Well at least i feel a little better from hearing from you thank you very much
Well you can do things to try and see where the problem is or even fix it. Depends what is the root cause though.
First thing would be, if you have the right master socket, unscrew the bottom half and try connecting directly into the test socket. That then takes any extensions and wiring out of the equation and is effectively the shortest most direct signal you can get on the line. Only problem is that if that does help the speed may not immediately go up, just the sync speed and maybe noise margin figures, the system only moves it up after 3 days of stability. If it's the same then then you'd need Orange to test things out to find the problem.
The master socket that I have Is one of those types and is wired with just two cables going to A and B (black and green wires) have not tried to pleg into it that way so will give it a go. What does it mean if it wont connect plugged in this way?
Just to say have done a test as ive just got in and found that the speed has gone up today to a staggering 486kbps what can this mean? suddenly feels like im on the fastest speed ever lol
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 896 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 454 kbps
Again those details point at stability. The system recognised that it's been sync'ing at a higher speed and not dropping as low so raised the profile. For that particular sync rate, 896kbps, 1/2meg is the best profile you can get.
If you plug into the master socket and it can't connect then it suggests something funny's going on as it should provide the best connection. You probably won't see an instant speed jump as the system won't recognise it as stable for a while, however the sync speed should go up. The bigger the jump the more it means the internal wiring is the cause, the smaller it is means the wiring is fine and it's probably something external on the line or at the exchange.
Thanks again Elhana
Its making a little more sense now. I will try the master socket and see what happens. Would a free view box affect the livebox as it is near bye and runs off an internal aerial? Also the line in from BT has only four wires black clue Orange and white just incase this makes any difference.
Cheers
The freeview box shouldn't make any difference, even if it was producing interference unless it was connected to the phone line somehow it shouldn't matter.
You only need 2 of the wires connected up, there's a site with details of this stuff linked from the 8meg forum's useful links sticky post.
Hi again had days of up and down speeds but did reach 986kbps for a couple of days at most but now back down to under 400kbps and some disconnections. Will this ever be sorted I ask myself as I get more sense than talking to tech people. Even customer support said they would give me a month free and refund telephone costs all of witch never happened. Seriously felling down and can't be bothered to log on anymore
Defintely looks like it's just plain unstable, your sync is down so you won't even be on a 1/2 meg profile. Because of the length of your line it may have been better to stay on your previous speed than moving to the rate adaptive ADSL Max.
You'd need to pester Orange to get a fault put through and hopefully BT will spot this and recommend it pretty quickly, or fix whatever's making it unstable.
