First I'd like to apologise for the length of this post, I have asperger's syndrome and it makes me a stickler for detail, so I might run on a bit.
I've been with Orange for a few years now, no major problems so far as I'm sure you'll all be surpised to hear.
I started on 1mb then 2mb became available and so I upgraded to that with no problems. I just noticed that 4mb was available to me (according to the Orange site) recently, no idea how long it had been available, but the speed increase, being completely free sounded great, so I went ahead with the change.
It's now been a couple of days since then and now my sync speed (i think I'm using the right phrase there, but not sure ) is now 5.9Mbps instead of the old 2.2, it's varied from 5.5, to 6.0 and now 5.9 over the past few hours, which is, as far as I am aware, completely normal as things are still being tested and what have you.
I took an online speed test, a few actually, they all report an increase in upload speed, from around 380, up from the old speed of about 250. But download speed is under 1900, slightly less than it was before.
I am using my old speedtouch 330 that I was orignally sent, they sent me a livebox more recently, but I didn't set it up because it requires mains power, and I dont have any sockets to spare, but I could set it up if it was really required.
So my question is, why am I only getting ~1900 download speed with a reported sync speed of about 6.0mbps? Is it a limitation of the speedtouch and it's usb interface? Are things still being set up and I just have to wait for things to change? Or is this a problem or limitation with my phone line? Or something else entirely?

There is an issue about Speedtouch at speeds of over 4 but as you are no where near that it does not apply.
WHY ARE SPEEDS SO SLOW:
The simple answer is that it is now clear that if you are on Orange LLU anywhere in the country the best speed you will get is 2.7 if you are lucky. Otherwise it will be considerably slower.
Some people are permanently as low as 608.
The reason for this is that Orange have set their equipment to give these speeds.
They knew when they signed you up that you were not going to get a fast speed.

So there's nothing that I can do about it? Other than change isp?
Now my sync speed is down to 5.6mb and the speedtests are giving me less than 1400kb/s
There are speed problems on LLU but you don't need to worry about that as you're not on it. The upload speed being over 288kbps proves you're on ADSL Max.
For the first 10 days the speed can and will vary somewhat. Also the speed is dictated by a BT system which sets the IP Profile, if you go through the BT speedtest site ( http://speedtester.BT.com/ ) it should show what you're currently on. The profile can take upto 3 days to change if a bad connection made the system lower it but in the first 10 days things don't always work quite like that.
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 4032 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1756 kbps
Does this mean that I'm still being limited to 2mbps? What should I/can I do about this?

As long as you download and install the up to 8Mbps drivers for the 330 from the SpeedTouch site you will get a good speed and it will cope with it download from here HERE and choose the driver for 8M lines when my router crashed a while back it gave me virtually the same speed after downloading the updated driver if its still slow its down to Orange.
And then im afraid you will have more chance of having dinner with the queen than Orange fixing it.

You are on ADSLMax 8 meg service. You appear to have (1) a very long line to your exchange which is limiting your sync speed, and (2) a possible stuck profile. Even at your sync speed you should have an IP Profile of 3.5meg as opposed to the 2 meg showing in your speedtest results.
As to the speedtouch 330 usb modem. I would ditch it and get a router.
I said it before, the speed can and will vary in the first 10 days on Max, some often report stuck profiles until the time is up and it then suddenly increases.
Unless you're getting intermittant low sync rates the speed should go up either within the 10 days or in 3 days time of maintaining the higher sync rate.
The best thing to do right now would be to keep an eye on it and wait until the full 10 days since your first connection on Max and see what happens then.
