Whenever (not intermittently, sporadic, confined to time of day etc) I try to send an email I get the following error message:-
Sending of message failed.
An error occurred sending the mail. Unable to connect to SMTP server smtp.freeserve.net. The server may be down or incorrectly configured. Please verify that your Mail/News account settings are correct and try again.
After anything up to 6 hours and dozens of attempts the mail goes. I have to quickly send all mail in this sometimes brief window of opportunity.
Incoming mail is not a problem, it flies in....
The settings are all correct, nothing is/has changed or changes.
I'm using Thunderbird but the same thing happens with Outlook(Express).
Is it Orange, BT, XP, T'Bird, Outlook, Gremlins, Poltergeists????
When are Orange going to sort out this problem I have sent numerous e-mails about this and all I get in reply is "check your account settings". I too change my settings between "wanadoo" and orangehome" in order to try and get the e-mails to go. Even when they do go they take an absolute age. I do not seem to have problems receiving mails just sending.
I have to admit that over the last two days the sending of emails has been somewhat improved. Not perfect, but better. Again, I've not altered anything.
Emails now go, on average, at the second attempt. Whoopeedoo
Still can't access FTP Sitebuilder tho' I've just given up on that and have bought hosting from UK2 Net.
I have not altered any settings, just added another account, Orangehome, rather than keep altering my settings and then at least one of them works. Hoorray today both accounts work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I test the accounts by sending a test email to my sons computer. Today, Orangehome worked straightaway, freeserve/wanadoo worked on second attempt.
Yesterday Orangehome did not work at all.
Lets all keep our fingers and toes crossed that they have finally sorted it. Or is that TOO much to ask??????
Probably tomorrow it will be back to square one again.
I have just tested my emails.
Email on Orangehome didn't send so tested freeserve and it went. I then resent email on Orangehome and it sent.
My brother sent me this email last night:
The pop.orangehome.co.uk and smtp.orrangehome.co.uk servers are the ones
that Orange say you should use on their web site so I don't know why they
don't work. If anything I would expect the Wanadoo and Freeserve ones not to
work. They are probably the same servers in any case with different DNS
references. I can't use my Orange/freeserve/wanadoo servers to send email at
all (I can only receive them). I have to use the NTL servers - I think their
firewall stops me from using the Orange SMTP server.
I'd be interested to see how it turns out. It sounds to me as if their
servers may be being accessed by too many users at once. If your settings
were a problem then you wouldn't occasionally not be able to send emails -
it would be all of the time. The fact that you can send email occasionally
points more to server congestion.
I use the Kmail client under KDE on Slackware linux. I get the same intermittent problems sending and flit between the whatadoofus and orage settings usually one or other sends OK. More recently I've had to revert to using a third party SMTP host though as I'm getting about 50% failure rate.
So it's not XP or Outlook. It's not BT either as we're on TalkTalk - though it's all the same equipment, right?
Thanks to all those who post about SMTP failure and the various combinations of smtp.orange.co.uk (193.252.22.138) smtp.orange.net (193.252.23.131) smtp.orangehome.co.uk (193.252.22.139) and smtp.freeserve.net = smtp.wanadoo.co.uk (193.252.22.139). I have tried to ping these sites and find that they all timeout. smtp.blueyonder.co.uk responds in a very respectable 11ms. Is there any reason why a ping should fail to the Orange stable of lame horses other than they are overwhelmed / off-line?
[wanadoo but can't?]
I'm very glad to come across this site and realise that other people have been having similar problems to me. The First Line support people really have no idea, but interestingly when I phoned up about cancelling my subscription they found a Second Line support centre I hadn't been told about. They sounded as if they might have a clue, they promised to ring me but (so far) haven't.
Anyway it may be of interest to people that I'm having the same very intermittent problems with SMTP - usually doesn't work but occasionally does with no change my end - but just at present my wife's laptop is able to send messages like lightening but my PC isn't. Same wireless LAN, same SMTP server (orangehome) configured. Maybe it's something to do with server load balancing and she's been linked to a different physical server?
If it really is just server load then the answer must be reluctantly to move to another ISP. Reluctantly because I fear that may stir up other problems, and I don't really want to have to change my email address.
