I managed to escape the world of Orange! I had asked for a MAC code, however my account was cancelled so had to wait for line to become free before moving to a new ISP. I chose Be (www.bethere.co.uk) and so far I am very impressed with both service & support... Be supply their own router, but I thought it would be interesting to see what would happen using the 3com router I used on Orange. To be fair Be is an ADSL2+ service, however on Orange LLU I should have been getting between 6 & 8Meg which I was getting on ADSL Max prior to the change!
Anyhow, onto the results all with exactly the same setup as on Orange....
I've just discovred that by default "Be" configure connections to use "Interleave" as this gives a more reliable connection on bad lines... As my connection was stable I asked for them to switch it over to "FastPath"... The change was made within 10 minutes, yes that is minutes not hours or days! The result came as a bit of a shock... I was expecting a small speed increase, but not this :-
The speed is amazing, the stats just show numbers however watching a page load almost instantly is the real selling point! I'm hooked... There has been some slow down on the speed tests this evening, the lowest being 13,500kbs which is still VERY respectable and in all honesty has to be expected in the evenings as everyone gets home from work and jumps online... That said, it's totally un-noticble whilst actually surfing, where as my Orange connection used to revert to dial-up speeds around this time of night!
The BeBox also includes two VOIP ports, Be are planning to release some kind of service in the future however there's plenty of help in the forums for configuring these to work with existing providers. The other interesting thing is that the 4th Ethernet port is reserverd for Video??? It would therefore seem they are planning some kind of Video service in the future too!
It's also worth pointing out that ADSL2+ is more prone to line problems especially with distance. If you take your current ADSL Max/LLU Attenuation and add 5 the following chart should give you an "approx" speed on Be.
That said, my attenuation is 26.5 (was 22 on Orange) but with FastPath I'm connecting at 20,424 so all comes down to quality of the line... You can also use the rather cool DMT Tool on the BeBox which shows you loads of info about your connection and even lets you twesk some of the settings!
This sought of result from another ISP only puts to shame the kind of service Orange deems fit to provide their users, I can only say I'm green with envy Thomas
