Some of Orange servers are blacklisted [...] and are on a few spam blocking lists.
They have been for ages... SpamCop in particular. I've been delaying moving to another ISP because I thought 'someone would sort it out' but it's just been getting worse recently. Several important work-related emails that I sent failed to get through.
I tried to solve this by sending SMTP via Madasafish instead (who were very helpful), but Orange / Wanadoo / Freeserve (yep, I've been with them since the start) fail to allow reverse DNS lookup or 3rd party SMTP authentication, so there's basically no hope at all of reliably sending email from Orange and expecting it to arrive... as confirmed by Orange's own helpperson Sumitra.
So what exactly am I paying for? Of course, the fact they failed to tell me I could get faster throughput for less cost per month by switching to one of their newer packages didn't go down too well either.
Well, no longer: as soon as I can decide which other ISP to go for, I will. [It would be Madasafish, but their webmail only permits ISO-8859-1 charsets which is a real problem for me.] Maybe Zen?
I've come to the same conclusion as you ozaru. I left zen to join Orange. I have had a problem with Zen but Orange was free with the mobile phone package I have. It was a big mistake - the fact that I can't reliably send or receive emails has caused me many problems and cost me financially.
I am moving back to zen and advising anybody I speak to not to use Orange broadband.

I've meanwhile found a solution (maybe just temporary, but anyway): setting my outgoing mail (SMTP) server to use port 587 instead of port 25 means it IS possible to send via non-Orange servers such as Madasafish and hence avoid the problems with the anti-spam blacklists.
It appears that my mail is now getting through (apart from a few people whose anti-spam software blacklisted my own address when mail arrived from me marked as spam due to Orange's server problem!).
The most annoying thing is that the port 587 solution is dead easy, but Orange's tech support refused to acknowledge that such a possibility even existed. Back to school, Sumitra!

Typical! I've been beating my head against a brick wall for the past few days as I have a new laptop which I've been configuring and couldn't understand why the receipt of emails was so sporadic.
I should have know better really after all the Broadband upgrade hassles, shouldn't I !!!
I've changed my defaults to pop.fresserve and smtp. freeserve and have just had 3 days worth of emails arrive in my Putlook Express inbox
It's over 2 months since I started this topic and the problem with downloading Orange e.mails goes on, although I have seen an improvement.
Surely when it is effecting so many people, Orange ought to be solving the problem whether it is at their end or not. It is certainly means that my view of Orange isn't quite as good as it wood be otherwise.
What I have found is that if I keep Outlook open all day and keep trying to download Orange e.mails, it will never work. If I close down Outlook, leave it a while and reopen it, it may well work. Bit tedious because Outlook takes ages to open up, but at least it is a solution. I wonder if it could be something to do with the fact that when I open Outlook it connects to Hotmail and checks for e.mails on Three old accounts, before I even tell it to "send and receive" ?
On a lighter not, what's this Putlook Express. Sounds cool
I have experienced similar problems since before xmas.Orange customer service dont seem to be able to think beyond their standard answers and its always the customers PC at fault.I have complained to Orange CEO today but unless something changes quickly an alternative ISP will have to be found.
When I complained about their orangehome mail servers when I rang up to give my one month's notice to cancel my dial up service they said that yes, lots of people had mentioned it.
I wanted to scream FIX IT THEN at them ... but I counted to ten and controlled myself.

For the last few days my emails have been arriving ok. I don't like to speak to soon, but have Orange at last sorted it out? I also seem to have lost all my spam mail which I had been getting 30 plus every day, now I only get the mail I expect so it seems the Orange server spam filters are working too. Anyone else noticed an improvment this week?

Hi,
I was also having problems sending emails but could receive them okay. I was also having some problems connecting to web pages. Anyway I changed the MTU value on my router and PC from 1500 to 1482. This was mainly to fix the web page problem but it also cured the email problems. Use a program called Dr TCP to change the setting on your PC.
I can only assume that Orange have been upgrading/replacing some hardware in some exchanges which has altered the default MTU value.
I had a problem which just started in the last few days in downloading my emails from Orange into MS Outlook. I have now discovered that if I disable 'Sacn Incoming Emails' in Norton Internet Security (2007) then the emails immediately download without a problem. I believe that something therefore has suddenly caused Norton to block all of my emails. I'm still trying to discover how to set up Norton so that it stops blocking the incoming emails.
Ah, thats probably to do with an update to Norton, on some occasions it can alter settings to cause this or just changes how part of it's system works.
Heard of it happening from time to time with several different security products, it also doesn't effect all people the same as it can often depend on your system settings when it's updated.
