Hi, i'm currently on 'upto' 8mb broadband, upto being the prime word here, and i'm having major ongoing problems for around 3months now when i'm using the connection at peak hours (between 7pm and 11pm).
I mainly use my connection for playing World of Warcraft (as i'm sure many do here also), using Ventrillo and playing music through Shoutcast on Winamp, all at the same time.
My problem is, at peak hours, my ping on WoW goes absolutely insane and i get frequent Disconnects from the game, in which being an endgame raider completely ruins my game as it's peak hours when people don't work!. My Ventrillo lags to death, and my voice also lags to death. Shoutcast buffers every minute or so.
This is Clockwork and is annoying to say the least. I've done a speed test just now and its showing 1mb down / 245 up. However, on weekends, it works all day and night as i expect it to work. 5 out of 7 days unstable connection is not acceptable without any compensation, or fluent english speaking support.
This is my livebox
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 30.9
Attenuation (dB) : 45.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 9120
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 1152 288
Can anyone explain to me what all this means please. Thank you.
So what you're saying is my speeds 'could' be better, but Orange are restricting my connection to a solid 1mb even though i pay for 'upto' 8mb?
If this is the case, i'm already annoyed and i haven't even picked the phone up yet :O
In all honesty, everytime i phone Orange i get frustrated and angry with them because of the poor level of service. The only helpful person i've spoke to was a guy telling me what i need to do to move ISP (which only leads me to believe he 'was' on Orange but transfered, because even their employee's know its crap! lal).
Maybe i will phone them later at peak hours, so they can do the mandatory checks on my line and say "yes sir everything is fine, now GTFO" when it clearly isn't alright. Cheers.
I will phone them and ask that question, thanks alot
If what i ask, has an answer which is in my favour, i get silent treatment and errr's and arrr's and put on hold while they think of someway to get me off the phone.
Try asking an Orange employee what Upload speed your connection is. I spent 15minutes just asking this one question and i never go an answer, because she didn't know - i suspected she didn't know connections even had an Upload capability.
Edit/ Out of curiosity, i checked some thread here about ISP ratings and saw Freeola, which i checked their website and according to their speed test for my phone number, my Exchange is Warrington (which is it, i live in Warrington after all) and the expected speed is 8mb here. I do live 20minutes from Manchester and 20minutes from Liverpool (2 of UK's biggest cities).
well rick i live in liverpool, jus by the albert dock. For some mad f00kin reason am on an exchange which is about 3-4miles away (lark lane exchange)!! From my back bedroom window i can see the 'royal exchange'
No one can answer my question: why am I not on that exchange, the one i can physically see?
I play counter strike, and my pings after 5pm are 250+, I cant play until 11pm
phonin Orange is a waste of time m8, only when u need to u should!!
but even if I leave Orange and move to another ISP, i think my connection would be jus as bad because of situation with the exchange!!
Which exchange you're connected to is upto BT and the ISP has absolutely no say in that. In the end it's down to where the physical line actually goes and it's not always the way you expect.
Well the phone system's pretty old now, it doesn't help that for so many years they've been tacking on bits here and there.
It's like painting, there comes a point where you ought to stop messing with it and just get a new sheet of paper. Their 21CN is them doing just that for all the stuff behind the exchanges.
Well i've used my MAC code on swapping to BT. I've gone for the upto 8mb they offer, and it's on the ADSLmax network, which is upgraded in Warrington so i should receive 8mb or there about's where i am the guy was saying.
I was going to stay with Orange, but in order to get put on their ADSLmax upto 8mb, i'd need a new 12 month contract, and to be honest i think i'd rather snap my legs, bend over backwards and shoot my brains over the kerb than put up with another 12 month's of this. BT can't be any worse than what i get with Orange, and if there customer service is anything like guy who setup the account the other day .. /gg ;D
For the records, i did several connection tests through out the night(s) and at exactly 7pm, my connection goes down at a drastic rate until 11pm (pretty much on the dot). At 5pm, it was 940/245, at 8pm it was 310/240, at 8:30pm it was 330/240 all the way until 11pm where it was back to about 940/245 after this time. Playing World of Warcraft, alot of packets are constantly being sent, and most MMO's require a broadband connection for stable play, so this is not nearly good enough. 1mb/245 like it should be was, but still poor so for £31 a month, for upto 8mb broadband, Orange can suck my cock
Orange must be doing something at these times, if i'm not the only one getting this pattern. FunkySkunk, you should phone BT and get them to do tests on your line, and what speeds you could receive. You never know
