After the common problem of line drop outs etc,etc after upgrafing to 2MB,I decided to switch to BT. Orange sent a MAC code by e-mail but BT inform me they cannot recognise it. Orange now tell me they can't issue another MAC code for 30 days. Is this a way round the new 5 day requirement for MAC codes?
The MAC code system has always operated like this. When a code is generated it lasts 30 days. A new code cannot be created until the old one expires as any request just gets the same code back in response. Apart from confirming with Orange that the code you have is exactly correct there is little you can do if BT, whose system generates it in the first place, can't recognise it.

Orange are well known for giving out Incorrect or invalid MAC codes to make it more awkward for people to leave seem they are still at it report them to the ISPA

Tell them that the MAC code they have given you is invalid and hence expired. Point out to them that they are at fault for issuing an invalid and expired MAC code and that as the MAC has expired they are required to provide another on request. The following extract is from the new MAC process and covers expired MACs:
A1.9 Where a MAC has already been requested and provided, the Communications Provider shall not impose any limits on the number of additional times an End-User may request the provision of a new MAC in relation to the Broadband Service, following the expiry of any other MACs
If they won't play ball advise them you will report them to OFCOM for non compliance. Phone OFCOM on 020 7981 3040 and select option to speak to an ofcom officer. I did this today over another matter and they logged all my details and said they will take it up with Orange at the highest level. If more of us take this approach it may encourage Orange to start playing by the rules. Also if enough complain in this manner it may prompt an investigation into Oranges mal-practices.
i must state these MAC CODES come directly from BT and if incorrect it is a fault of BT'S, not the serice provider... it is also a known fact that a new MAC code can not be generated until the previous one has expired - one month to be precise, yet another rle of BT's
to sum it up - call BT tags on line, tell them your situation and demand a MAC CODE

If you read other forums you will see that Orange regularly give people non existant MAC codes and when they do that they can offer a valid one as the previous one never existed in the first place i know also from experience when i obtained one also there is a few on here that have had several invalid MACs from Orange that BT never even generated in the first place.

If that the case then under the new MAC process it is the providers responsibilty to ensure a smooth transition. That includes resolving erroneous MAC codes.
It may be BT's fault but its Oranges responsibilty to resolve. If that means Orange liasing with BT then thats what they should do. It is not the customers job to do that.
Just another case of Orange copping out again I guess

For anyone asking for a MAC i recently changed provider i asked for a MAC by email and my MAC was sent to me within 2 hours any decent ISP can get them off BT quick (If they want to) last year when i tried to leave Orange to get my MAC i had to go to the ISPA to get it off them after 3 weeks, since the new rules Orange are still up to their tricks of trying to withold MACs and giving out invalid ones its got nothing to do with BT its Orange making it as awkward as possible for people to leave.
