I posted yesterday about my speed (or lack of) and have just seen an article on the bbc website http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/tec...385631.stm which is basically my problem. They tell us we are getting up to 8 Meg but in fact, we are getting much less - although they claim that speeds are getting faster which is probably true, though not as fast as they would have you believe with their advertising. It's worth having a read and Orange are way down the "league table".
Interesting reading but does not give a realistic picture and in my opinion a bit of a waste of time.
Oranges LLU has a record of underperforming when it comes to speeds so will not score well in this area. Also as the article implies and most of us know, distance from exchange is also a major factor.
Any survey needs to be on a like for like basis. IE LLU against LLU against comparable line distaces from the exchanges. The same with ADSLMax. Start mixing the two together along with varying line lengths and your bound to get a distorted picture.
I am not defending Orange, like most here I think they are amongst the worse, but had they not gone with LLU but stuck with ADSLMax then they would probably have come out a lot better.
Agreed these findings do not compare on a like for like basis . However, what I think we should take away from these findings is that it gives an accurate representation of what speed you are likely experience with an ISP, after all- its an average, if the speeds were good, then the average would be good.
Despite the disclaimer saying these finding are not related to performance (this is probably stated so that ISP's can't quote this data)- it is a direct relation to how the ISP is performing. Orange coming second to last, speaks volumes of about Orange, and this is reflected by the nationwide complaint of their LLU network. "Up to 8 meg", With this claim I would expect the average to be say at least 4 meg? But it is not, its 1 meg...On a scale from 1meg to 8 meg? That is some serious underperformance....
End of the day, we can't choose how the ISP provide broadband, be it ADSLMAX or LLU or cable, so therefore if they did break it down like for like it would give not give further information. What we can compare is the Speeds the ISP say they provide, and the actual speeds they do provide (As shown in the data).
