I'm not sure if this is the correct place to air this question but here goes:
I have set up my livebox and after initial teething trouble it is now working okay. I've been told that I should make sure that I secure my wireless connection which (I'm told) means chaning my SSID and password on both the livebox and my computer. I have done this, even putting in a new password not the one that is stuck to the bottom of the livebox) but when I try to connect with WPA or even WEP set I can't connect. I then have to connect with a cable and reset the thing to No security. I'm not happy about this. Can anyone help an absolute beginner secure their wireless connection?
The livebox is relatively secure even with the default settings.
To change the details though you'd need to change the key and SSID on the livebox config pages then tell each wireless PC to reconnect to the new SSID and enter the new key as needed.
I've changed the SSID and the key in the livebox, changed the security setting from no security to WPA and entered a 26 character key. I have then done the same thing in windows network connections but when I remove the cable and try to connect wirelessly I cannot connect. The furthest I get is a message saying Acquiring an IP address or network connection. I've also tried WEP/WPA and still no joy. Does the admin p/w to the liveboix need to be the same as the WPA key?
as soon as uve reset the livebox, it goes back to its defuaults remember, so if youve changed it, then reset it, make sure you change the settings inside the livebox again

So long as the box worked previously then I have an idea what the problem could be.
The new key you used, was it Hex or Ascii?
Hex - Characters capitals A-F plus numbers.
Ascii - Any standard characters, lowercase, uppercase and symbols
If it wasn't try using a hex key, similar to the one on the sticker but with your own combination.

No, the admin password is seperate and should have no effect on the connection at all. It would be a good idea to change it if you're not sure.
Also once you get things working how you want you may want to save the configuration, then if something goes wrong you just upload it to the box and it's back how you like it.
I used hex for my key A-F and 0-9 combination 26 characters long so I'm not sure why the computer, with the same key isn't connecting to the live box. It's a new laptop with a centrino wireless adapter. That should be WPA compliant you'd think.
Have you tried using the windows wireless zero service thing to connect? All i did was use that to search, fouble click my network and it aked for the passphrase then and it all worked fine
Yes windows zero wireless is running. I set the key in the livebox and then in the Wireless Connection properties chosing Network Authentication = WPA-PSK and TKIP data encryption and then typed the network key in twice. This is exactly how it is set up on a friends PC (not on Orange admittedly) and that has worked fine for over a year.

That should be the perfect settings.
You say you typed in the key twice. Can you not setup a ethernet connection with that PC, get into the config and copy and paste it across directly? This sort of thing is drilled into tech support's heads as it saves so much hastle and prevents all manner of really easy mistakes.
Also you did press the "1" button on the livebox so it was in pairing mode?
Also has it worked wirelessly at all yet or only not since you changed the details?
I keyed the network key into the livebox and then copied it to Notepad and copied it from there and pasted it into Windows and then again to confirm. I used the cable to connect while I was doing this. I can't remember about the 1 button. Do I do that before I connect with the cable?
It only works wirelessly with No Security.
Is there a conflict between centrino and the livebox?
If it works without security then it can't be pairing as that's required even if it's on no security. Are you using windows itself to run the wireless connection?
If so go into network connections,
right click and go into the properties of the wireless connection,
select the wireless tab,
highlight the listing for your livebox and click properties,
you need to set it to use WPA-PSK and TKIP,
re-paste the key into the boxes as needed and ok it all,
make sure the livebox is still in WPA only mode,
press 1 on the box,
try and connect and see if you get any further.

I have a Centrino laptop and its working great using WPA wireless security
