To me this is just further evidence of the appalling service being provided by Orange. Granted, one can argue the difference may be due to dodgy lines, but I will bet my savings that this is not the case and it is due to equipment needing upgrading and/or capping on your line either way its bullsh!t.
Orange must have a real problem, they obviously do not want to be in this position. They don't appear to have the ability to sort it out.
I believe Keith that this whole debacle regarding the LLU network was not some oversight and predicament that Orange unfortunately 'stumbled into'.
Large companies don't buy equipment on the whim, they select, assess, and trail equipment. Orange knows full well what the capabilities of their LLU network are. Secondly, they certainly know how to sort it, its not a matter of "Its the highest speed your line can handle"- this excuse is bullsh!t.
See the only way to fix the LLU problem is to upgrade exchanges with appropriate equipment which can supply a reliable highspeed bb connection, and boost capacity which would remove caps, and also get rid of traffic shaping. Why don't Orange do this? BECAUSE THEY WANT YOUR MONEY. Why should they bother to anyway? They have covered their backsides with alterations in the TOS and they have extended contracts to 12 months (both to minimise legal proceedings and maximise revenue).
I keep reiterating these things because people seem to think that Orange is somehow a victim in all this, and that they are doing their best?!!? THEY ARE ORCHESTRATING IT. They know what they are doing and how to do it, they know how this will all pan out. I will also put money on the table that as this problem becomes more widespread and is covered by the media, they will get itchy feet and might start to offer discounts or even waiving contracts- instead of actually solving the problem they want you to put up with it.
Sadly, I see the only way Orange will respond is when their profits start to slide, the likes of other ISPs like BE are starting to increase their LLU networks into exchanges which actually do the job- When the honeymoon period for Orange is over and people start leaving the sinking ship only then will they pull their socks up.
Please, don't for one second think Orange doesn't want to be in this position because they put themselves in it (minimum effort, maximum profit).

Interesting theory and you could well be right.
What I would like to know is how they get the LLU equipment in the exchanges - who actually does it - BT engineers? How quick could they upgrade it.
I don't think the contracts are worth the paper they are written on there is ample evidence to show that this is not an up to 8mb service.
Other issue I see are Trading Standards and Advertising Standards. I don't think that Orange will want to get into a stand up fight with too many customers.
Small Claims court is another issue - they would not want to defend many of those it would cost them a fortune.
Well ive not yet heard from Orange regarding my "outstanding" payment, but i will certainly be one of those going to small claims if they pursue it.... they CANNOT expect ANYONE to pay for something that did not and does not work... even their terms of contract state that if they cannot provide the service then the contract is not applicable....so i suggest that anyone in this position fights for their money...i think it wil cost them a LOT more chasing money that actually receiving it.
Good Luck guys ... im hoping to have my new ISP in place in the next few weeks.
I have Orange 8Mb BB.
My brother has Sky BB.
We are on the same exchange in Woolson, but he live slightly closer.
you dont say who pays what for each connection, how the service was sold or type of connection so really a pointless comparison
i have a ford my dad has a merc boo hoo his is faster
my neighbour is on Tesco and gets 8.5mb i "only" get 2.7mb but she pays £28.00 per month i pay nothing so she pays £3.29/kb but i still pay nothing point i am making is even then her price plan is still subsidised against the cost of a real isp with real technical knowledge and real customer support
orange may be a poor isp but that is the flip side to going for the mass market /cheap option by that i include every isp who sells another product
pipex Virgin tiscali etc maybe even BT
any industry that competes on price or give aways will never be able to meet customers expectations nor will they bother to try , Tesco own brand food is terrible compared to waitrose so lets complain to the boss of Tesco -nope doesnt matter they have had a sale
if you have a stable bb connection they have meet their obligations faults will always occur and again pay enough and you will get the service you are paying for.
This is my companies role within another industry similar to bb but our customers pay more per month for telephone support alone than Orange etal charge for a months bb provision
get back on the net and look for a proper isp then cry when you see the price ( dont forget their t&C too)
to kiethwjones
forget what you hear elsewhere the only people allowed into a BT exchange are open reach engineers that was the whole point of BT splitting the llu equipment isnt oranges it is leased to Orange, line faults are caused by little bits of copper and BT will always own the local linc
I didn't sign up for Orange. I was a Freeserve and then Wanadoo customer. I became a Freeserve customer when BTInternet started letting people down on their service so I moved on.
Orange over promised and under delivered. Result is another lost customer
should have got out ages ago just from customer inertia issue
Sky deal lot better in your case just anoys me when people moan about speeds when it is obvious upto not fixed
Angus, My best friend is a Senior manager for BTOpenreach- Openreach do not have any access to Orange's LLU equipment! Infact the have to work at seperate times during the day to insure business integratiy. I am completely frustrated with Orange, and I don't know what do do next. Like PSmith I am on the woolston exchange, orange have now promised me 2 months free internet, but take a look at my speed now. I am paying £27.00. Prior to LLU migration my Downnload speed was between 4 and 5 meg at busy times. Now my speeds is running at 400k download and 35k upload Psmith, have you had any progress wiv Orange?[/url]
Hi, No ive had no progress with Orange. You are paying £27.99 a month, how long do you have left in your contract? I changed mine to £20 a month for the same package and they supplied the livebox. Bad mistake as I am now tied into another 12 months, 9 months remaining. Dont be tempted to go for the £20 option if you only have a few months left OR are already out of your contract. Paul
