Yet another long term Freeserve/Wannadoo/Orange customer here who has just been buggered by a free "upgrade". I was on a 2mb connection with 30gb cap (paying 27.99 a month for it - over the odds but it worked flawlessly and I got 2mb speeds all the time). Then I got the "Great News" email telling me that I was getting upgraded to 8mb on the 13th of Feb. Speeds now bounce between 600kbps and 2.5mbps, although I'm about 0.5km from the exchange and my router reports that my line can handle 8mbps.
Speed aside, what is causing me major headaches is that since the 13th my modem/router (Intertex IX66) has been crashing several times a day - seems that the connection "blips" and can't be recovered, forcing me to restart the router and any PCs switched on at the time before I can get onto the net again (can't even get the the router admin page). If I do the reboot everything is fine again... for a few hours. Before the upgrade it never needed restarting - ran for months at a time.
So after years of being a happy customer I'm seriously pi**ed off now with this unwanted upgrade, and I now either want a massive discount or I'll change providers. A few questions for everyone:
1) Does anyone else have problems with their router crashing intermittently, or is it just a speed issue for most people?
2) What exactly is it that they have done? Is it something to do with LLU at the local exchange (I've read through loads of posts in the forum but still can'tquite work it out)?
3) Is the problem likely to improve after, say 10 days, or is this it now (it doesn't seem to be getting any better after 3)?
4) What is the best price that people have negotiated for the "8mb" (lol) unlimited service - did someone mention £12.99?
5) Or should I just jump ship now and not even bother waiting or negotiating?
My advice is get out of Orange ASAP.
Things will only get worse believe me. Thousands upon thousands of people (including myself) have fallen victim to the lies and excuses of non-caring Orange.
The important thing to remember about them is that they are not an ISP.
They are nothing more than a lying, robbing, non-caring disgrace.
I'm also a long time sufferer with this joke outfit.
My router shows an 8mg connection, 288 upstream (LLU).
According to the BT Wholesale site my line is good for 6mg.
I've read somewhere that once you accept the "free upgrade to 8mg" you are then on a new 12mnth contract. I dont know if this is correct, i am lucky i accepted the free upgrade over a year ago and as far as i know i can just cancel.
This connection has averaged at 0.6mg for the last 10 days...pathetic !
But today i have had a speed of 2.7mg, thats the best connection i have ever had in roughly 6 years with this ISP.
It's not 8mg but it may make me stay with them until it all goes wrong again, then i'll be giving Sky a call.
The new 12 month contract is only for when you request it or offered a deal when trying to cancel. Either way you should be forewarned about it so it's a choice.
I have similar problems with Belkin 7632. Initially also had problems with Speedtouch 30 dropping out every half hour or so, but that does seem to be cured ( brave words !)
And for the record - line nominally 4.6Mb at 1.5 miles to exchange. Typical download 2-3Mb, uplaod 200-230.

No.The problem with my router crashing has become slightly less frequent - maybe once every couple of days. It has been suggested to me that it's down to the PPP connectivity dropping out briefly and the router being unable to recover. Speed is still painfully slow at peak times, but passable in the middle of the night (although I haven't once seen it exceed the 2.7mb limit that many people have mentioned on this forum).
However, the problem should be fixed in approx 24 hours time - that's when my switchover to my new ISP is scheduled to take place, and I'll be off LLU and away from Orange (and paying less, to boot). Ironically, the same day that I got my confirmation email from the new ISP, Orange sent me an email stating "Great news... your upgrade has been completed". I had to laugh.
