I have also been going through the same type of trouble with Orange. My line functioned perfectly well when with Wanadoo but is now effectivly crippled. Could you have another look at your Noise Margin as mine has been changing for the last 2 weeks now giving me varying levels of underperformance.
Also out of curiosity how are you measuring your packet loss?
re the packet loss. I have a ping running in a command prompt window. ie
ping news.bbc.co.uk -t
leave it running for an a few minuteshour/day/whatever and then stop it and see the packet loss.
my packet loss has cleared up now but my "up to 8mb" line is still about 2.5mb. i had a call from Orange on tuesday to say i was now on a VIP list (!), that they would now work to fix my problem and they would phone me back every day until it was resolved. not heard a word since. typical.
Its interesting that your Noise Margin is set so high when your so close to an Exchange. With that attenuation level they could probably drop it to about 7 or 8 and still shouldn't get into the realm of packet loss.
Mine is the other way around. My attentuation is 41 (further away) and my noise margin is 6 which results in lots of lost data. Still 6 is better than the 5 they set me to last week which effectively dropped me to 500K.
If you are running windows XP then a wonderful utilitiy is included called PathPing which can be used to show exactly where the packet loss is happening.
I'm awaiting a call back tomorrow which I hope will end with my Noise Margin being raised. That is if the "line test" prooves the line is fine.

Hi haloj,
johnr3's synch'ing at the full 8Mbps, so his measured Noise Margin is almost certainly higher than his Target Noise Margin.
well, it's now seven months later and my current speed is... 0.2mb !
unbelievable.
in the last few months it's rarely been over 2 or so, but it has reached 6mb or 7mb now and then only to collapse again not long after. we even agreed to go down to 6mb to see if that helped it become more stable but it hasn't
add in a few periods of ppp server down (including over Christmas and New Year) when I had NO access at all, and I think you can guess I'm pretty much done with Orange.
I think I'll be calling up tomorrow and demanding they take it off my line. the only problem now is I'll be without broadband for a while until the line is clear. but I can't go on like this. 0.2mb is crazy.
just for the record, here is my current details
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 20.8
Attenuation (dB) : 26.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 10144
ADSL status : Connected [0]
John as I understand things, as part of a new agreement which came into force yesterday the transfer should no longer result in a loss of service as your existing provider (Orange) is obliged to ensure it goes smoothly. They cannot charge you for a MAC code and must give it to you within 5 working days.
Customers switching between ISPs that use some local-loop-unbundled (LLU) networks – where third-party operators put their equipment in BT’s exchanges - for example, may still face problems. uSwitch says the problem of how MAC codes are transferred from one LLU provider to another has not been tackled, warning that this could become more of an issue, as the number of LLU connections is predicted to double.
The new MAC laws do also affect those on a LLU line, however, if you are switching to new provider that doesn't accept LLU codes, then it makes no odds to you anyway.
We've just left Orange (yesterday) after a hell of a lot less hassle than you've had, and all the markers have been taken off our lines already, allowing us to sign up with Sky today. We too were on an LLU line, with zilch access, being told we'd have to give 30 days notice, then it'd take up to 10 days to remove markers. My OH had a word, and hey presto!!
Hope you manage to find yourself a decent provider, and well done for putting up with all that crap!
I've just spoken to Orange this afternoon and they agree it is time to move on!
I was considering moving over to cable (Virgin Media) to avoid any downtime but I've been told I might be able to move to another LLU provider easily. I spoke to BE and they say I can move with the Orange LLU MAC code. They reckon I'll get 17mb for 24 quid a month... tempting.
Not quite sure what to do now! I had all but convinced myself I need the V+ HD service that Virgin Media provides Not that there is any real HD content to watch of course, but ...
my migration to be unlimited went ahead today. currently connected at about 15mb down and 1mb up. that'll do me!
ok, i'm paying 24 quid a month for it rather than "free" (although I was paying the extra monthly fee) but it's worth it!
very happy to say goodbye to Orange but a big thank you must go to Ian Sunderland in the customer advisory team for all his help. I've rarely spoken to such a calm person, especially considering the job he has and the annoyed people he has to deal with!
