Have read most of the threads on here and cant quite see the same problem.
I managed to get online last week for the first time on a machine running 98. Surfed for hours no bother and downloaded the free software AVG, ZoneAlarms and Ad-Aware and still all worked fine. Next day came home, switched on the PC and couldnt see any websites at all. Checked everything, rang the helpline who tried the diagnostic tests and decided the problem was with my LAN settings and i should phone Microsoft!!
Decided to try my old dialup and that seemed to be successful as connected to the internet, but again i couldnt see anything in my browser. I tried this with 2 different browsers and had the same result.
SInce then i have tried reconnecting/reinstalling and keep getting the 'you may have your firewall on' error. I have deleted all the previously mentioned software and still get the same error so i dont seem to be able to get any connection at all.
I also tried to link via a laptop and that didnt work either.
Am stuck as to whether the problem is the LiveBox or my PC. Am debating as to whether upgrading my OS to see if that will solve the problem, but am skint so dont want to spend money on that if the problem is the box!
98 can be really annoying to diagnose and fix some problems. Is the connection wired or wireless?
Try opening an msdos prompt and seeing what "ipconfig" brings up for the connection you're using. Also try "ping 192.168.1.1", ideally you want 4 packets received.
Connection is wired and have already tried to ping that address. 0 packets were received. It was at this point the broadband support guy said problem was with the LAN settings and to phone Microsoft.
Edit to add: My Dad has a copy of Windows Millennium. Is it worth changing to that and seeing if that makes anything easier?
I had Windows Me on one of the machines on my wireless network - waste of time - it kept "forgetting" it was part of a network and I had to keep running Network Connection wizard. As far as I'm aware Millenium version is just 98 Third Edition effectively.
Much better to bite the bullet and upgrade to XP if you must have Windows.

Windows ME won't help at all in this situation, it's simply an upgraded version of 98 and I don't believe the networking part is really any different.
The ping test shows there probably isn't an ethernet connection working on there at the moment. Did you try the ipconfig command and if so what did this show for the ethernet connection?
Also just to check go into the control pannel and network. You should see a listing for your ethernet card/port on the list. Also there needs to be another listing for it marked TCP/IP at the beginning. Highlight the TCP listing and click properties, the IP address tab should be set to the automatic option and on DNS configuration it'll probably say disabled.
