This is my first - and hopefully my last posting here. I've been watching the site and seeing plenty of you having all the same problems as me, many years a happy Freeserve and then Wanadoo user but then Orange comes along and everything turns to sh1t: weeks on end with no broadband, horrid Indian call centre, a fortune spent on 0870 calls, many promises made and none kept etc etc. I think you all know the drill.
Anyway, I have done two things to escape the Evil Empire:
1. (I realise this isn't an option for everyone) I have a second phone line into my house and a full Sky subscription, so for just £40 I got a "free" 2Mb line and a perfectly respectable Netgear wireless router. Were it not nearly free i wouldn't have chosen Sky because their offering is a bit primitive but it has been as steady as a rock. The Sky router is next to my LiveBox so when the latter goes down I just reattach everything to Sky and I'm away.
2. Once my backup service was in place I went on the offensive with Orange. I managed to get through to the Middlesborough call centre (the Indian one is useless - just put the phone down if they respond). In a friendly way I refused to go through the usual test-everything process and explained that after six months of hardly any service I had had enough and wanted to cancel without penalty and get my MAC code. The chap I talked to was sympathetic enough to put me through to "Customer Care" who promised me a MAC code within 5 days, after which it would be emailed to me. Naturally that didn't quite happen but after a couple of calls I have my MAC, I've cancelled my direct debit and have placed an order with another ISP. If I can summon up the energy I might now go after some compensation but if I never have to talk to those T0ssers again, it will be too soon.
I wish everyone here the very best of luck in dealing with Orange. You can escape - just do it now!
