I recently bought a brand new unofficial Wi-Fi dongle for Nintendo DS. (I couldnt buy the official dongle because I have windows ME and it only worked with Windows XP) I have Orange broadband and a speedtouch USB modem. When I try to connect to wifi with my nintendo DS I get a message reading Unable to obtain ip address. Move within range of the access point or check DHCP settings. I am within range of the access point so it must be a problem with my ip or DHCP settings, whatever they are. I have phoned Orange broadband up today and the man could'nt tell me my ip address all he told was the Primary and Secondary DNS numbers. He also advised on phoning up nintendo, so I did. When I phoned up nintendo they said that they dont know what the problem is and that Orange Broadband may have built in security software that blocks wifi (could some one please tell me if this is true)
Ok, DHCP is a system that provides IP addresses to devices as needed. It's probable the dongle software uses DHCP to give IP addresses to devices so they can correctly talk to each other.
You can go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ to find out your broadband IP but that can change each time you connect and probably won't be needed for your wifi connection.
If you have security on (Usually WEP or WPA) that could cause that sort of message by entering the wrong code or if it's getting interference.
