My reason for leaving Wanadoo was their refusal to admit to me that they filtered tcp/139 (netbios). I required the use of this port to connect to an archaic system that I needed to remotely administrate over the internet, but was completely unable to connect no matter what I did.
Using tcpdump i inspected the traffic and saw that when a tcp syn packet is sent out from a wanadoo connection, the default gateway (assigned by wanadoo when you connect to their broadband service) sends back an icmp unreachable code to the host and discards the syn packet. In layman's terms, this proved that they block the traffic.
I called wanadoo countless times, insisting that they blocked the port but they would not admit it. I went right up through their management but nobody would admit that I was right, despite me having concrete evidence that I was willing to show them, nobody would listen. Eventually (no doubt due to pure stupidity) they referred me to the manufacturer of their gateway routers.
At this point I gave up and found an ISP that have some idea how their network works. If anyone is interested, Force9/PlusNet are very good.
