My livebox is driving me mad and I was hoping someone can help me pls.
Cutting a very long story short with little problem solving from many calls to Orange, I have 2 main issues
1. Over a period of time, my internet connection seems to slow down and eventually gets unusable. A reboot of the livebox seems to fix it. Orange's response was to keep rebooting it and because the filter gets blocked over time (like a fuel filter) I should request a new one from them every 6 months ! Can you believe it?
Now for the bizarre one
2. To improve my chances of a faster connection I decided to move the livebox closer to the master socket. Once moved I had 3 days of outage - even connecting it to the BT test socket in the master socket didn't work. No solution from Orange . Although to be fair it did unexpectedly start working temporarily whilst I was on the call with them. Out of frustration I decided to configure my old dlink ADSL router and magically it connected first time. Now for the even more bizarre bit. I then switched the livebox back in and it too connected first time. It seems that moving the livebox to a different socket exhibits this behaviour and the dlink unblocks it each time.
There's no logical explanation for the circumstances that you describe in (2).
I won't even bother to comment on the 0range response in (1) !!!
Probably, and the clue is that there was no connection when you used the test socket, there was a temporary fault in the external cabling or the local exchange that recovered and that coincided with when you connected the dlink.
I thought the same about the outage but I can't see it being the case for a few reasons....
1. The timing was too perfect. I literally had the Livebox plugged in, tried to synch then failed with a "link down". I immediately disconnected it, connected the DLink and it worked. Then immediately plugged in the Livebox.
2. I moved the Livebox again last night and exactly the same happened.
- Livebox was working
- Moved to new location
- Livebox dead
- Did the Dlink trick
- Livebox works again
3. Now that I have thought about it a bit more and my neurons are starting to fire!, I remember that several years ago I had a similar problem (I think it was something like "PPP server down" rather than "link down") and the helpdesk sent me a 1Mb modem to try. The same thing happened (i.e. plug in the new modem it works then magically the livebox did). This was the same livebox as I have today.
I wonder if this is either a firmware bug or a hardware issue.
OK reading your post again I realise now it was the Livebox you connected to the test socket not the dlink.
It could be a faulty Livebox but for it to occur again after "several years" I doubt it, hardware faults like that tend to stick around getting worse. Much more likely it's a network fault either B T or 0range.
Yeah - in my case, the time would be explained by the fact that it wouldn't have changed phone socket in that time. The issue seems to happen when I move it to a different phone socket. Unplugging it and putting it back in the same socket seems to be fine.
