hi, about 2weeks ago now i upgraded my broadband speed from 2meg to 8meg. when viewing the internet gateway in my network connections it says i'm connected at 8meg, but when i do a test online it still says i'm connected at around 2meg. wtf is going on here? do i need to turn off my livebox or anything to get this upto speed? :s
Try running a speedtest through...
http://speedtester.BT.com/
If it lets you run the test what does it show for your upstream, downstream and IP Profile?
you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of 1748 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.
BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:
For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.
It should have given you an IP Profile speed too which is pretty important for speed issues.
Unfortunately, of late this site has been redirecting to an alternative where it provides the type of report posted. Every test I have tried over the past two weeks has resulted in the same type of report.
strange i had exactly the same problem when i had eclipse broadband.
i phoned them and said hey you are charging me for 8 meg and im getting 2. NO NO you are getting 8 meg service sir...FFFFF no i'm not.
Anyway, They had a dedicated FTP site and told me to navigate to that and download 3 different files of Three different sizes and report to them the time taken and average speed etc.
This did determine that i was on the lower speed and they regraded me again and i was then to full speed.
So ask if Orange have a similar way of helping!?!?!?
i redid that speed test on the BT site. i got this:
Quote:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1722 kbps
If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.
If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.
Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

Ok it's currently set to 2 meg. Providing your connection is stable it should go up within 3 days, if not then it could be "stuck" or there may be some other problem.
yeah i managed to get an email through to the Orange helpdesk thing today and they said that they're doing tests on the line and s**t atm, and it should be sorted in a few days or something. so i'll wait another 4/5 days and if its still slow then ill get onto them again.
