Hi, would appreciate views from some of you please!!
Ever since the much-vaunted 'improvements' to the Orange service, alledgedly implemeted during the last couple of months, my connection seems to be much worse. BT apparently upgraded the connections/wiring in our local 'box' sometime last year, which made no noticeable difference - despite them ringing me with blandishments about the brave new dawn of high-speed etc etc. We are at the end of an unmade lane with absolutely no possiblity of any telecoms operator being enthusiastic about installing cable/fibre optic etc, and although the computer is on a newish line installed for the purpose some 4 or 5 years ago, speed is constant around 3.5mbps.
However, since this 'upgrade' from Orange, my system now takes forever to load, crashes/freezes/becomes non-responsive etc etc to the extent that I am now finding it very frustrating. Luckily we don't need it that much for work, but it is now becoming a pain.
Any ideas? Is the Livebox likely to need 'resetting' or should I just bite the bullet and change suppliers?
I am very reluctant to ring the 'helpline' for all the usual reasons - and I have yet to recover from the trauma of Orange and Openreach between them, some 5 years ago, managing to completely disconnect my broad band due to miscommunication (the bills had all been paid!) and it took me Three weeks to get it reconnected and then only because I eventually managed to contact senior managemnent at BT and threaten to sue.
However, email functions better now than it used to - and to a degree, better the devil you know....!
Or is it likely to be just my admittedly old system - running XP - just can't cope with the newer technology?
thanks to all in advance

Presumably, your connection has changed from 0range LLU to their new B.T. White Label arrangement which is either up to 8meg IPStream or up to 20meg WBC.
Can you run and post the result of this test >> www.speedtester.BT.com and also your router's stats ?
I have tried Three times over the past couple of days to access speedtester.BT.com and each time I get there, it untruthfully says 'testing' then freezes/crashes and I have to close IE and reconnect in order to escape.
The 3.5 was the result from 3 other test sites this am.
i will have a go at this tomorrow when I may have a little more time - it's not going to be that easy! The main BT socket is right on the other side of the room, below the window - the engineers told me that they would not install it where I needed it, so my electrician connected an extension cable to it and fixed me a further 'hard wired' socket where it was needed - ie - the far side of the office.
So to enable me to undertake your suggestion - everything will have to be disconnected and moved, the cables aren't long enough!!!! We don't have wireless laptop, but wired in desktop - (large monitor required) - as computer only used as office equipment.
However, it's not that I expect to be able to accdess higher speeds etc - it's simply that since the 'Orange' upgrade - it appears to have got a lot worse, as I said before, now takes even longer to connect, becomes unresponsive, freezes, drops connection etc.
I really don't know - in order to conceal the cable it was taken up the outside wall, in through the soffit, across above the ceiling and down inside the stud wall - we had a lot of building work done at the same time and I hate visible cabling - and it was just before 'wireless' everything became quite so ubiquitous!
Well unscrew the lower half faceplate and if there are wires connected to it then the installation is cabled correctly. If as you described the cable is connected to the same place as the incoming 2 wires then the installation is incorrect and could be contributing to your problem
To Borednow:
I have unscrewed the bottom half of the faceplate and the extension wiring is connected correctly into the back of this.
please could you explain to me what 'attenuation' and 'noise margin' mean - is it to do with the distance from the exchange? I don't mean to be stupid, sorry.
thanks also to Rick300 for info - I have visited the link and have briefly skimmed through all the info - but am honestly trying to avoid having to disconnect my entire system, haul it over to the other side of the room , reoonnect it all, plug into the 'test socket, disoonnect it, haul it all back to where it lives, reconnect it all and pray it works!!!! Yes, I know, it may come to that, but I can do without losing half a day - there's only me to do this and everything else!!!!!
Attenuation is an indication of line length between your property and the local exchange to which you are connected. The higher the figure the further the distance.
Noise Margin is more complicated but simplistically it's the minimum signal to noise ratio (SNR) at which the connection can maintain stability. Within that calculation is Total SNR and Target SNR.
Most connections use a Target SNR of 6dB and that should be the noise margin that you see when the router connects.
The lower the noise margin the faster the connection speed.
I realise it's difficult to move equipment around but you only need to move the router to connect into the test socket. Get hold of a long ethernet cable to connect it to the computer that can stay on the other side of the room. You really won't be able to make progress until the test socket is used.
Maplin sell them or get one off Amazon.co.uk/?tag=orangeprobcou-21&camp=6&creative=6786&linkCode=ur1"> Amazon or eBay.
