Just as I thought I was free from Orange, my youngest sister has had me look at her Orange connection which failed after Saturday night.
Both her Zoom X5 router and my own Netgear DG834 show a 1408 kbps downstream connection but will not connect to Orange's network. Up until now her connection has been on the slow side but quite reliable.
Have there been any registration server failures at Orange as a brother-in-law recalls a clock change triggering off a registration server failure at his ISP?
After a number of calls to Orange, a visit by BT man who checked the line and pronounced it OK, Orange supplied a Netgear router (my sister had never been supplied with router or Livebox as I believe her broadband connection dates back to the days of Speedtouch b/b modems).
Last Monday she connected the new router and a new micro-filter and oddly enough (but not immediately) her broadband connected.
I am puzzled because both routers she had on loan from myself seem to work perfectly (and did work perfectly at sister's house until the start of these problems). I am actually sending this using the Zoom X5 that she had on loan from me for several years with no problems whatsoever. It works perfectly on my BT connection but previous readers might recall that my line attenuation is only 2dB and sync speed here is 7616kbps (Interleave is on).
I did note that my sister said that it took several minutes before the new ( Orange supplied ) router re-established her connection. I wonder if there might also have been some form of glitch at the Orange end of the pipe?
I guess it could also be that there could have been a problem with the micro-filter she was using, but that seems to work fine here with no discernible difference in line stats.
