Hi, I joined Orange back in March last year, a year ago.
Was the home select package ever advertised as upto 20mb?
I logged into my Orange account for the first time today and it lists home select as upto 8mb, the reason I ask is my speeds have dropped off considerably over the past say 6 months, I see alot of people share my experience.
The reason I joined Orange despite it's terrible reputation was because it was the only isp with an LLU service at my exchange and I presumed I would be on it.
everything started great, i'm just checking my speedtest results from a year ago:
between then and july 2010 I was getting speeds of between 10-15mbps, never dropping below 10mbps, then in July, after 3/4 months the speed dropped to 8mbps consistently, I wasn't too happy, but it was better than Sky and I was sure I was on the LLU service so i've let it be.
But as per the first part of my rather long winded post, it started getting slower again about 6 months ago, today's result:
Basically, I want to know:
What are Orange doing and is there anyway to get my speed back to at least 8mbps?
it ran stable at 10mbps, then at 8mbps for 6 months, are they capping me?
I apologize if this has been asked/posted about several times, there does seem to be alot of similar threads...
Status: Cable connected
Line mode: G.992.5 (ADSL2+)
Maximum line rate: 4994 kbps (downstream) / 1014 kbps (upstream)
Noise margin: 15 dB (downstream) / 4294964939 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation: 39 dB (downstream) / 22 dB (upstream)
Output power: 19 dBm (downstream) / 12 dBm (upstream)
Clearly your connection is ADSL2+ but the 15dB SNRM is what is limiting the throughput speed.
If your main B.T. socket has a removable lower half then unscrew it and plug the router into the test socket inside then post back the stats from there.
My guess is that the ADSL2+ DLM is reacting to some noise on your line OR Orange have reset the profile from the default 10dB to 15dB.
I thought the higher uprate meant I was, i'll get the stats from the test socket, but can't do it today I have a box installed by BT which should be killing any noise on the line...
just opened it up and yep, that's what it says, well, BT80B...
Do you think the slow down in speed has anything to do with the now defunct (which was news to me) home select package?
Just after I posted this message I started receiving calls from Orange to discuss my needs and they mentioned new deals, now it's called simply broadband offering upto 20mb, which I want, but it costs more, is that their game, to get more monies off me?
The BT80B is an RF3 filter which is used to overcome the effects of radio frequency interference or REIN.
What is near you that would transmit that type of interference ? eg industrial generators, electric fencing (used on farms) water/sewage pumping station.
Because that BT80B isn't doing the job it's supposed to do
Probably nothing to do with the defunct package....but there again anything is possible in the 0range World

Well I'm on Home Select & my speeds are as good as usual (16meg) but maybe I'll get a call soon about a change.
yes you will get a call tim. Orange have tried to contact me over the last few months, phone call after phone call. I am on the £12 a month package, Home Select, orange's cheapest broadband offer is now £15!!
When I did speak to them, they were trying to get me to move package, phone call bundle packages etc, all were more expensive than my current £12 a month. So yes they are trying to get people to move up to pay more AND of course a brand new 12 month or 18 month contract.
I am not tied to an Orange contract, that ran out middle of last year, I can get my MAC code anytime I want without penalty and I am paying £12 a month, at the moment I am more than happy with that.
Stats still looking good at the moment:
Channel: FAST, Upstream rate = 1252 Kbps, Downstream rate = 14016 Kbps
Link Power State: L0
Mode: ADSL2+
Channel: Fast
Trellis: U:ON /D:ON
Line Status: No Defect
Training Status: Showtime
Down Up
SNR (dB): 6.6 6.9
Attn(dB): 35.5 18.3
Pwr(dBm): 19.4 12.4
Max(Kbps): 14705 1265
Rate (Kbps): 14016 1252
If Orange phone tim, politely decline their offer and say you are happy with what you have and ask them not to phone again. Worked with me!

nothing like that around me.
it was installed before I got Orange broadband, and as per first post I was getting decent enough speeds a year ago, it's dropped slowly but surely over the course of a year, it must be Orange getting involved...
