I’ve been using 2 meg all you can eat for six months as 2meg is the fastest our exchange can handle. When i bought the 2 meg £17.99 deal i was assuming that i would get 2meg. But as i am sure many of you understand this is really only ever unmetered full bandwidth at 1am in the morning to about 6am, the rest of the time tiscali throttle bandwidth connections, which sometimes is quite a lot. It can make a difference of a minute or two on the Symantec download for virus update for example.
Still it has been a very reliable service. You can use skype (so far) without malevolent background interference so they can sell you their voip offer, which I think is good for tiscali customer focus. No downtime or connection clichés and i am not using their modem so i had to set up manually which was easier than i expected.
My profile if this helps? I am a very heavy time user with broadband on 24/7 and about 9 to 10 hours plus use a day including business, email, children online and up to Three computers connecting via a wireless and Ethernet hub. We use streaming radio and online gaming. I had my stepson over for a weekend and he downloaded / uploaded a fair bit so I got a terse auto email about being a heavy user and going onto a fair use abuse area, but I never had it invoked. So I guess heavy downloaders who want to use it a peak times 5.30 to 9.00 pm will get hit by tiscali. Ping can be an issue (ie I get a high ping (sometimes) despite fast connect and fast computer) and I think this relates to their bandwidth throttling (could be wrong I’m not a techie) so if you are heavy gamesters may be worth investigating a better low ping provider. Ping can be main factor in being allowed to play online with a group of equal rated computers and connections.
I migrated from wanadoo after being a ten year plus email user on freeserve mainly because they kept cancelling my email address and i would have to phone customer services who were so feckless but eventually helpfull ish; until it happened again and again. I feel this site vindicates my decision not to stick with them. I do have experience of other isp’s through business and there really is no need to accept cr*p service as there is plenty of choice out there. Overall Tiscali, not perfect but OK. Oh if you use the online site to manage your account it will drive you batty having to put your email and login in every time you want to go to another area, that really is poorly thought through.
!
i have reread my post...and so to be clear- :bulb i would recommend tiscali given my points. so as not to unfair to them they have delivered reliable broadband
After the shower of incompetence of Wanadoo/Orange, I went to Tiscali - now I've heard a lot of bad stuff - but they are the only ISP that offer a reasonably priced unlimited 1mb package which is the best my line supports.
My experience is mixed - they did at least confirm my suspicions that Wanadoo/Orange ran the line too fast at 6mb initially, only then downgradeding to 2.5mb when I made them. Tiscali were however really slow to connect me - but it works!
At least I now have cheaper and more reliable internet. And I'm not looking back (except to claw some of my 6 months broadband bills back from Orange!)
As someones sig in here says, the futures s**t* with Orange!
