I am having problems again with e-mails I am sending not arriving. This is happening with e-mails to Talk Talk and also to some dedicated servers. It seems totally random. If I reply to the Talk Talk e-mail it seems to work OK, but doesn't if it is a brand new e-mail to them. Does anyone know what is happening?
I've been having similar problems, and have discovered what's been going wrong for me.
For ages now, email sent to me from Orange accounts has been disappearing. Sometimes it would arrive, and sometimes not.
Here are my findings - I hope it might help others.
Orange email servers have a very bad reputation for sending spam. They frequently appear on many of the spam blacklists.
ISPs often pre-filter incoming mail, looking simply at the IP address. If an email comes from an IP address with a very bad reputation for sending spam, they delete it before it even reaches your inbox (or spam folder).
ISPs don't tend to tell you that they do this, but they have to otherwise their mail servers would collapse under the weight of incoming junk.
Only some of Orange's mail servers will be blacklisted at a given point in time. When you send an email from an Orange account, it will be sent from one of their mail servers (lucky dip). If it gets sent from one which is blacklisted by the recipient's ISP, it will not get through.
This means that you could send 2 consecutive messages to the same recipient, but only one will get through, or both or none, depending upon which server actually sends each email.
I discovered that my ISP was using this blacklist to delete my incoming mail from Orangehttp://psbl.surriel.com/. (Note that Orange appear on many others as well.)
I have asked Orange to ensure that their servers are whitelisted, but that does not seem to have been done.
They may be having a problem doing this, as a condition of being on a whitelist is to ensure that you monitor your network, and make sure that your customers are not sending spam. They are clearly failing at this, otherwise they would not appear on so many blacklists.
I hope that my findings will help others, and would encourage anyone else experiencing similar problems to complain to Orange.
