I've had Orange since the dial-up days of Freeserve. My evening speed has been decreasing over the last year sometimes down below 0.5 Mbps from 2 Mbps due to apparent contention ratio problems. My email request to CS came back with a patronising reply and ignored all of my facts. So a call to CS got my MAC. I'm now with BT Total broadband and although my sync speed is the same i.e. still on ADSL Max as my exchange is in the stoneage, my evening speeds hardly drop from the daytime rate. So, don't put up with Orange poor service; there is another world out there. Also BT didn't want a £5 premium for being on a stoneage exchange.
My problem is that I'm a long way from the exchange so my attenuation is 52db and my noise margin varies. Due to recent line noise my noise margin went from 6db to 12db and is creeping back down again; it takes weeks when this happens. I've found with BT that doing a Speedtest shows better download speeds in the evening compared with Orange i.e. almost up to my 2500 kbps line profile. Interestingly a ping test shows worse delay than Orange.
