I have a problem and could use some advice. I work nights and needed mobile access to the tinternet and decided to sign upto Ortange's early bird tariff and pay the extra £25 for the high gain/speed dongle (515 option?).
My problem is incredibly poor access speeds even when the dongle picks up a 3g or 3g+ signal with say 4 or 5 bars. Now I know that the net Can get very busy in the wee houirs dur to half the world being online but this is ridiculous.
I've tried using a usb extension lead in order to dangle the dongle (ooo errr) out of the window, and whilst this usually gains an extra bar or two download speed is virtually no different. I use the dongle in various locations across Derbyshire and Notts with pretty much the same result. At it's best I can stream a very low (>1mbps) bitstream from a good uk server, generally thoug my connection tops out at around 300kbps. To compound matters a colleagues standard Orange dongle picks up a better signal in exactly the same locations.
Another colleague has a 3 Dongle and the difference is astounding - even when the 3 dongle only picks up 1 or 2 bars of 3g (not like for like I know) it averages around 1.5mbps, on a good HSDPA (3g+) signal it breezes along at upto 4mbps.
It also seems the Orange 515 dongle gets incrediably hot during use - after 10 mins it's uncomfortably warm. I spoke to Orange about the heat and speed issues when i initially signed up (Mar) but there answer was speeds can't be guaranteed and as long as it works the heat isn't an issue.........
Has anyone else had similiar experiences? Any solutions? Forgive my terrible grammer but I have been awake 22 hrs now!
