My friend has just moved into a flat with Orange Broadband and Phone installed, however, she has had a bit of trouble connecting wirelessly to the Livebox.
She asked me for some advice, so I went into her router configuration and changed the WPA password, but no dice. As a test, I thought the next step would be to disable the wireless security altogether and see if we could get connected then. Still nothing, so I reapplied the security settings.
I was going to leave it at that, because that is pretty much as far as my troubleshooting knowledge goes, when I realise that we can no longer get connected to the internet AT ALL, not even through the ethernet cable. The @ light is flashing a combination of fast and slow (which, from what I gather from the 'orange help' webpages, can mean anything) :s and the connection status is showing LINK DOWN.
After a power reset and a factory reset, I still got nothing.
I can't imagine it is anything to do with the wiring (although I did double check that this was all okay) because the internet was working fine before I came along and stuck my big foot in it. They have had some trouble with the phone service, at the moment they are getting a crackly dialling tone, but again I don't know if this would be an issue as the internet was working fine regardless.
Phoning Orange customer service is really a very last resort because I am not the account holder (and neither is my friend) and from the sounds of it they are all about as much use as a chocolate teapot anyway.
Please help! I feel if this goes on any longer I will have to buy her a pint, which I can't do because I'm a student and proper skint!

If there's an NTE5 main BT socket, it has a split faceplate and the lower half that unscrews, then plug an analogue corded phone into the test socket behind the faceplate and dial 17070 option 2.
If there's any noise whatsoever even the slightest hiss then report it to BT or 0range (whoever the rental is paid to).
If there is no NTE5 then just do the same but use the main BT socket NOT an extension socket.

As Borednow says if there's noise on the line & that crackling sounds bad then it must be reported to the relevant company.
Noise on the line will cause you all sorts of problems with your internet speed & reliability.
I agree that no one changes their router settings on a regular basis, but I find it strange that tinkering with only the wireless configuration caused the internet connection to drop for such a long time...

What broadband package do you think you've got?
I'm not sure, as I've said I'm not the account holder and neither is my friend. I think they are thinking about switching from Orange anyway, but I've already advised them to do the line test as Borednow advised and report anything to BT, otherwise their problems will just follow them no matter who they go to.
