Update
The very helpful lady from Orange phoned me and this what had happen
Following our recent telephone conversation, please find below the
information as promised:
Once a broadband account is closed it then reverts to a Dial-up Pay As
You Go account. If you don't connect to a Dial-up Pay As You Go account
at least once every 219 days, the account will suspend or become
inactive. When this happens, you'll receive the error message 'invalid
username and password' if you try to dial up using the account or, if
you use the email address from another connection, you’ll receive email
notification. The account will become suspended after 220 days and after
a total of 260 days it will be deleted from our systems.
We do advise customers to either dial in to their account or retrieve it
via our website to prevent it from becoming suspended and then deleted
from our systems. To find out more about this process go to
www.orange.co.uk/help and see article KB146. Once the account has been
deleted from our systems we're unable to retrieve it.
There are many threads on here detailing the 219 day rule but this only applies if you no longer have an Orange broadband connection but continue to use or wish to retain your Orange email address.
The majority of the recent email problems have been caused by email server faults.
