Up until a few months ago I was getting 3.5 Mbps download and 0.5 Mbps upload. This gradually deteriorated down to 0.8 Mbps download and 0.2 Mbps second upload.
Emailed Orange about this and they gave me all the guff about connection set up, connecting to the main phone socket (it is) etc. They then state that having done a line test they have found they need to alter my broadband speed either up or DOWN(!!) So what is likely to be causing this problem?
I am serious thinking of jumping to o2 (now Sky) or Sky which from the reviews seem to offer a better service than Orange (especially o2 (now Sky))
One thing of note is that I am on the old £5 unlimited broadband with my Orange phone. I got a phone call from Orange a few months ago asking me if I'd like to 'upgrade' to the select package. I pointed out to the person on the phone that I wasn't going to upgrade as I'd pay more for less (£9 and no phone calls via Livebox!) He told me the 'select' service would offer more 'reliable' broadband.
The speed has slowed markedly since. Is it possible that my connection is being throttled in order to get me to upgrade?????
If it doesn't improve in 7 days then I'll be asking for my MAC code and it'll be bye bye Orange

If you think of jumping ship then o2 (now Sky) could be the best option provided they have their own equipment in the exchange & can offer an LLU service , if it's Access then don't bother. o2 (now Sky) have UK based 0800 support which is pretty good.
The problem with 0range is that their support is India based primarily and about as bad as it can be.
Are you able to get stats from your router showing your connection details or do you have an ADSL modem like a speedtouch which would mean you can't.
Still got a rubbish connection. Indian call centre has no idea when it'll be fixed so rang up customer service and asked for my MAC code which hopefully will be with me in the next few days?

Off to <a href="http://buy-broadband.at/theside?CTY=1&CID=7793" target="o2 (now Sky)">o2 (now Sky)</a> then.
Received MAC code today and put my order in to o2 (now Sky).
Well my <a href="http://buy-broadband.at/theside?CTY=1&CID=7793" target="o2 (now Sky)">o2 (now Sky)</a> connection just went live and here are the results.
At 8am this morning (Orange connection):

Nice one mate, mirrors my results when I switched to BT.
Funnily enough I have exactly the same setup, the same deal (unlimited £5) and exactly the same issues!
Speeds used to be between 3.5Mb and 6Mb, now its 0.5. Several calls to India and several rests of the box etc have got the speed to 0.75Mb.
Latest call has resulted in a "line test" request which I assume will have no use. Are Orange deliberately slowing my service?

Liam.
Well I'd had enough of their 'they will look into it' and nothing happened so I left and now pay £7.50 to o2 (now Sky) and get about 4.5 Mbps.
I am of the opinion that my service was deliberately being slowed to get me to change tariff. Well I did change tariff and provider!!!
Thanks for the reply. However I am moving house in Three months so can't really switch broadband providers until then - I'd prefer to get the problem fixed!
The problem doesn't appear to be just those on an old low-cost trariff. I currently pay £25 a month for my Livebox/free VOIP 2nd phone using a BT rented line and in the evenings my speed often drops below 1 Mbps when it is over 3 Mbps during the day. In my case it's obvious that my local exchange is seriously overloaded which is a BT Wholesale problem. Interesting that using PlusNet's exchange checker my exchange has just gone from Red status i.e. virtual paths overloaded for many months to Green. Does anyone in this business know how it all works or is it all just a game
