I've been using a Philips SNA5630NS/05 wireless router/modem for around 3 years. On Sunday (26 Jun) my connection went down and since then I have not been able to re-connect. The ADSL light is flashing and the router will not sync. I have also tried a friend's Belkin router and this was the same (ADSL light flashing).
I got in touch with Orange who said it was a problem with the line. They arranged for a BT engineer to come out and have a look. The engineer came and confirmed there was a problem but couldn't locate it for sure. He eventually said it was a fault at the exchange and a card needed to be replaced there. He later phoned from the exchange and said there wasn't a problem after all? I needed to get a new router from Orange. This all seemed very strange!
Last night I found my old Speedtouch USB modem which I got when I first joined Freeserve some years ago. Managed to install this on my Vista laptop and straight away got a solid green ADSL light! I put in my account info and was connected to the internet!
How is it that this works Ok but my router which I have been using for ages has suddenly stopped working?

Sorry for the long post!
Speedtouch modems have a stronger signal detection ability than routers. You usually find that if your line is suseptible to gain issues or high resistance that routers more often than not can't 'hear' the ADSL signal.
The more likely cause as gain and high resistance are rare these days is that the line may be very long and if you are on a fixed 2272 profile now then again routers struggle to hear the signal.
I would first of all find out if you are on IPStream or LLU.
After this use http://kitz.co.uk/adsl/adslche...cker.php and find out your rough direct line distance by putting in your phone number and postcode. Any line longer than 3.5km usually suffers from weak signals and usually have profiles of less than 3000 (3.0meg).
Remember, speeds can vary at anytime and profiles can change several times within 24 hours.
I am only 527 metres from the Cambridge Madingley exchange (EAMAD). The BT guy said I should get a very good connection and it's always been very reliable until now.
ID Profile for my line is 6500. 2650 kbps download (should be able to get 7mb).
A new router from Orange will arrive tomorrow so we'll see!
Hi there,I am only 527 metres from the Cambridge Madingley exchange (EAMAD).
Remember this is direct distance and not necessarily the actual distance.

6500 profile yet 2650 downstream, hmmm, throughput loss by the sounds of it.
Quick instructions for you:
Stick the filter, modem and computer in your test socket, remove any other devices including phones and splitters. Run 2 tests within a short period on speedtest.net. Additionally ensure you are using the same RJ11 cable when testing the router as your speedtouch.
I doubt it has anything to do with the routers. The Netgear, Livebox and Siemens are all the same anyway, as is your friends router. If your friend can get connection at his house yet cannot get sync at yours it has nothing to do with his router.
CHAP authentication is different to sync though i presume you know this already. Have you set your friends router to your username and password?
Additionally you can run a speedtest on BT's site using their login details.
Username: bt_test_user@fs (their are freeserve domains but you won't need these if your username uses @fs prefix)
Password: (use anything, just don't leave it blank)
If the results are dramatically different then their is a speed issue between the Orange and BT servers of which Orange would need to rectify by sending out a BT Openreach transmission engineer.
Recieved a Netgear router yesterday from Orange and it worked straight away! They must have changed something somewhere to stop my other routers working!
