I moved house a year ago in the same area and since then i cannot get over 2Mbps speed though BT was showing me that my line supports 8Mbps and Orange account shows 6.5Mbps but i was convinced by Orange that i cannot get over 2Mbps because of the distance from exchange (shouldn't be more > 1.5miles).
Few days back i went to next door neighbours who were getting around 6Mbps in peak times (BT Brandband) and another friend living further 400 meters away is getting 4Mbps+ (Virgin DSL).
So does it really indicate some problem with my telephone line because there is a big difference in speed reported by BT/ Orange and what i am getting at the moment?
Last night i called tech support again who asked me to visit www.speedtester.BT.com to log speed at different timings which i cannot open dont know why. I then connected office vpn and www.speedtester.BT.com was easily accessible.
Is www.speedtester.BT.com a restricted site and note available to all Orange broadband customers?
www.speedtester.BT.com can only be accessed by users who have a <a href="http://btbb.at/theside?LID=21">BT</a> IPStream connection provided either by <a href="http://btbb.at/theside?LID=21">BT</a> or any ISP who buys in the <a href="http://btbb.at/theside?LID=21">BT</a> product.
So if your local exchange does not have <a href="http://www.maccodes.co.uk" target="MAC">Orange</a> LLU equipment installed then you would be connected to <a href="http://www.maccodes.co.uk" target="MAC">Orange</a> servers via <a href="http://btbb.at/theside?LID=21">BT</a> IPStream.
What is your local exchange name ?
Thanks Borednow. My local exchange is Wells, Somerset
Where 0range does not have LLU so you are on a BT IPStream connection.
There shouldn't be a problem accessing www.speedtester.BT.com but it does sometimes take several attempts to connect.
But just because close neighbours get higher speeds doen't mean that you should. It's quite possible the cable from your house may take a different route back to the exchange.
Can you post your router's stats back here ? if you're not sure where to find them, enter your router name into this web page >>>
That's because it looks like you are on a 2meg FIXED connection which won't register with the speedtester because it always returns 2meg because it's FIXED !!
Effectively your connection is capped. A fixed rate is normally used when there's a high attenuation and it's difficult to maintain a connection.
You need to get onto 0range and pester for all you're worth.
