Ok, where do I start. I am an IT engineer and have been working with PC's for 18 years now. I am experienced in pc stuff and ADSL/VPN setu petc etc. TCPIP not a problem.
Over the last 2 years I have had the same problem with 4 different households all using Orange broadband. At each location, I have tried the users pc, my own laptop etc to narrow the problem down. Neither access the internet. All are using a router. I will start at the earliest and you will see a pattern.
4 port modem router, can't display web pages, router connected to internet, can ping external IP's, can ping web addresses. Website found waiting for reply for hours never displaying a page. This is on the PC and my laptop.
Removed PC to workshop, plugged in and straight on internet. Swapped router, still no internet.
Next customer exactly the same fault as above using generic modem router. this time you could load up Google, search for something, it would bring back the search results but you couldn't get to a link or a page displaying a reasonable amount of content.
Next customer using Orange triangle shaped router. Same as above problem, at this customers I could remote desktop back to my office and transfer files to his machine, but internet explorer or firefox would not display a page. In the end I rigged his old USB modem up and left him working ok on that.
Last customer still fresh in my mind from Tuesday night, exactly the same fault as all the above apart from only loading half the google image from www.google.co.uk in 5 mins. I couldn't try remote desktop as my server was offline for upgrade to 2008. This was using a modem router supplied by Orange.
It was line sync'ing at around 8.5mb, I was wondering if it was MTU settings (a last resort as exhausted everything else) so I tried the MTU test with ping -f -l and changed the MTU setting in the router to the optimal one I found. The router then line sync'd around 9.5mb. Still no access to the internet.
Web page found, waiting for reply for over 10 minutes. The first 3 customers ditched Orange and went elsewhere, but the last one has only just signed an 18 month contract so he got a wireless router to play with ps3 online.
I know if he rings up tech support they will say it is connected, no problems at their end etc etc - to be fair this might be true, but something somewhere isn't right, and of all the different suppliers of ADSL I deal with on a daily basis I have only ever had this problem with Orange.
Has anyone experienced similar issues, ever got to the bottom of it ?
DNS is obtain automatically from Orange, and from router on pc.
I changed the pc to use static DNS address's first being demon and second using timewarp internet DNS servers. Still no different. You can ping a web address and nslookup acts as normal so I'm prety certain it;s not that.
I changed the MTU back to 1492 as it was originally. The router is actually set up to use VC based multiplexing 0/38 rather than LLU. This was being used originally though and worked for 3 months apparently. Playstation 3 has no internet access either now.

That's what my LLU connection is setup as, so that's correct.

At least thats a start, and the MTU is right at 1492
It's bizarre, I can connect remote desktop to another pc or server, transfer say firefox install files over but can't use either IE or firefox to bring up any web pages.
I have never come accross an ISP that I would have to mess around with MTU or RWIN to get working.
I am just in the process of wiping a XP home pc for someone who also uses Orange broadband. When I take this back from what we are saying I will have to mess around with the settings on this machine with a brand new install of xp ?
so are we saying all xp computers won't work with Orange broadband until the changes are made to rwin & mtu ?
Or is that the install CD for Orange makes these changes for you ? otherwise they would have major problems from day 1 as I bet at least 60% of customers still run xp
if it is down to RWIN & MTU settings within XP only why does the ps3 not work online either ?

Can't be anything like that as I've made no changes whatsoever on my 3 XP computers or my Win7 one.
Thanks for the advise, I can't test the described problem yet, it's at a customers house. Have to wait until he is in and I have free 10 mins to try the rwin stuff out.
I am taking back an XP Pro SP3 machine now to a different customers who had no problems with Orange broadband previously, only viruses.I have just put the clean install on. It works on wireless via router on Orange broadband. I haven't made any changes to rwin or installed the Orange software. Lets see what happens when I deliver it back
