Since December I have noticed a distinct drop in my download speed and have been trying to resolve the problem with Orange customer services - this time I will not phone and used their email system. I even got a couple of calls from a very pleasant guy who told me that their was nothing wrong with my system - which under normal circumstances I would have accepted. However prior poor advice leads me to suspect that the answers I have been given do not cover the whole truth.
I have been fairly happy up until December getting download speeds of up to 3.6+MBps. Accepting the fact that my local exchange has not been enabled for much faster in fact BT Wholesale report speeds up to 2.5MBps (I suspect that these are probably conservative - neighbours seem to be getting around 4Mbps)
I accept that speeds will vary for many reasons however I still feel something is wrong - either my understanding (or lack of) or Orange or my Livebox!!
Using Speedtest net (and others) this was about my average prior to December (used this after a reset of Livebox as did not save any prior to this date - I have seen higher at around 3.8Mbps)
This is todays - prior to reset
This time I have information from Livebox config pages
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : ADSL2+
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 8.8
Attenuation (dB) : 53.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 2497
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 2477 605
After getting these result I immediately reset livebox (not a full reset I know) by disconnecting the power supply for 30 second or so and reran the test with the following results:
Livebox config page

At 16:10 today livebox reports same.

I have had a reply via email from Orange as follows:
In response to your recent email with regards to your slow speed issue,
after checking BT Wholesale your available speed is 2.5mbs. Due to peak
time usage and congestion on the line and also your connection
type/internal setup the throughput speed (2.5mb) will not always be at
its maximum, so the speed of 2.1mb does not indicate a lower threshold
breach.
I followed this up with an email stating that others in my area with different ISP's achieving far higher speeds and stating that the BT figures in my view are conservative. From this I got a phone call from them saying that all is well it is to be expected that speeds change and I have not been capped or hobbled in any way. It is also normal for the Livebox speeds shown on config page to change.
Frankly I am not sure what to believe and how I should interpret the results shown here. I would have expected that the Livebox attainable speeds figure would have remained constant, while the actual speeds may vary (showing my lack of knowledge). The only differnece I spoted was an increase in Noise Margin.
The Kitz report shows better potential IMO than I am getting and would have expected (hoped) to be getting close to 4Mbps
Sorry for what has turned out to be a mammoth post but hope that someone with more experience can either point me in the right direction - or correct my wrong assumptions
Trying to understand and correctly interpreting what my Livebox is saying relating to my system. Why when I power off then back on my attainable speed shows a dramatic increase in download speed and what could have changed to cause the drop since end of last year.
I appreciate that attenuation of 53dB is not too good. I live only a short distance from the exchange and I have checked my system with both direct connection to BT master socket and on my extension - no change noticed!!
Therefore what further actions, if any, can I take to improve attenuation?
4.02Km by road from the exchange is not a short distance in ADSL supply terms. It's quite likely that the cables don't run along those roads.
In fact if you use the other Kitz calculator (Maximum ADSL speed one) then your 53dB resolves to an estimated 3.8Km cable length, which is not far short of the road distance, bearing in mind it's estimated.
Other than moving house, there's absolutely nothing you can do to improve the attenuation.
So when all the conditions are favourable your router should sync at around 4000kbps - 4400kbps.
What you can do is maximise/minimise those conditions that affect the ADSL connection and the Kitz site provides very good advice on this.
But as I said earlier, in the endyou may see a better connection by dropping down to G.992.3 or even G.992.1 because those use frequencies in the lower ranges.
