This is not a post about Orange broadband but rather regarding a stolen Orange mobile phone. If this is the wrong place to post this I apologise
----
During June and July 2004 I was on maternity leave overseas. During this time my phone was stolen. I cancelled my phone as soon as I realised this, but within a few days the thieves had racked up over £3000 worth of phone calls which Orange maintained was my responsibility to pay.
It was obvious that the calls were not made by me because
1. From the time the phone was stolen, calls were made continuously every few minutes to many different countries, for hour after hour
2. I had a phone contract with Orange since 2001 and my average phone bill with Orange during that time was about £80/month
3. I had never made any international calls on my phone except to my family in South Africa
4. Many of the fraudulent calls were made while I was on an aeroplane or in a different country (I believe the phone was stolen at the airport)
Despite this, Orange insisted I was liable to pay the bill and was not interested in discussing the matter.
They subsequently transferred the bill to debt collectors who were also not interested in what happened, only that I "owed" them money.
This has continued until now when I have been issued with a statutory demand for payment.
In addition to the fact that I did not make those calls, I maintain that Orange was negligent and irresponsible in not putting a stop to the calls. As with a credit card, when there is unusual activity, the card holder should be contacted and they need to confirm the spending or the card is cancelled. This never happened in my case, and it would have been a simple matter to call me on the mobile phone itself!
