i have had a poor experience with Orange, no call backs, limited speed usually so slow the connection drops, never more than .73mbps download speed. the info below is from the livebox system information page. should i be getting better speeds. I used to get about 3 to 3.4 mbps and am only half mile from the exchange...

Had the call today after loaning a laptop and plugging the livebox directly into the BT test socket for the last 2 days.
Orange man says, after telling him there is no improvment with speeds still between .4 and .82 mbps, that they will be increasing the line speed over the next 5/6 hours and I should see an improvement. They will call me back Friday evening to see if there is any improvement.
suddenly I feel that I am getting somewhere but its cost be 1 x ethernet cable (which i did'nt need) 2 x filters (which I did'nt need) and begging a laptop for testing purposes from my daughter, who's pretty miffed not being able to do something called facebook...
Had a call from Orange on Friday evening and confirmed with them that the speed was still only .8mbps at best from the tests carried out using the master test socket. They agreed to increase the speed to 2.9mbps and should take between 24 and 48 hours. they have promised to call back to confirm this.
Saturday saw an increase to 1.8mbps for most of the day with no drop outs, but now the fun begins...
Saturday evening and all of today so far has only been .56 mbps at best, so its suddenly got slower. The Livebox configuation page shows the following:
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : ADSL2+
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 14.4
Attenuation (dB) : 42.5
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 835
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 766 285
Looking at this they have restricted my line to only .76mbps which is worse than before. BT confirms with me that my line will take 5mbps with no problems. so i am on £18 per month on a dial up connection speed. Orange have again promised to call me today and confirm the line speed, they have also indicated that when the problem is resolved compensation from August may be a possibility. We wait and see....
BT came and fixed something outside which had possibly been picked at by the magpies.
Orange then called arounf 9:30pm to check that the line was stable and that the speed was up more then before.
The upshot was that I now get 1.8mbps which they say is the most stable connection they can do at this time. It was good that they had called me back at planned times rather than me having to call them.
As this problem was not of my own making and being given the runaround by the !st level support section I enquired how they would compensate me for the many telephone calls, extra filters I brought, another ethernet cable and having my internal wiring checked along with a poor connection since August: The result was that they are giving me free access for 5 months. I flet that this would offset all costs incurred and accepted the offer.
Had I not said I would take legal action against them if they could not meet the contract requirements this may not have progressed well, but i am now resonably happy with the result although very frustrating getting here. Once the 5 months is up I will be changing providers as BT have assured me that they can get 6.5mbps on my line being only 1 mile form the exchange...
