I have recently tried connecting my laptop (Toshiba satellite 2450-101 running XP SP2) to my livebox through a wireless connection using a Belkin wireless G notebook network card (I have also tried a Belkin USB adapter, Netgear adapter and the recommended Orange adapter).
Using each of the adapters I have managed to get a connection to the network, but with all the usb adapters I would get a varying speed which I would eventually lose, and hence why I decided to try and use a card. With the card I get a steady connection but as with the adapters this is lost after 30-40 mins. When I reconnect to the network I lose the connection again, and this continues with smaller time intivals each time.
What happens is that just before i lose the connection the speed fluctuates whilst decreasing. I have noticed that whilst this is happening the MAC address changes to all 0's and the channel jumps to 6. This occurs for a split second and then returns to channel 1 again (meaning the changing of the channel). Also, the MAC address, which is written on the livebox, does not match what my connection says but the name etc matches.
I have tried getting tech support from Orange, Belkin, Toshiba and each point the finger to each other as they all say "we can not give third party technical advice" however, I have tried explaining to Orange that it is nothing to do with my laptop or any of the adapters I have used as it has been a consistent fault throughout (or I've managed to purchase 4 faultly products ). Also, i have tried my laptop on an alternative wireless network with two of the adapters and it works fine, hence why I feel it is the livebox.
Also i have tried changing the channels and editing security and the problem doesn't shift.
Any advice would be extremely helpful, as I've given up on the tech support
Sounds it's probably a problem with the livebox. It's possible you're getting some sort of odd interference causing the disconnection but it's hard to show it's the case without a spectrum analyser or testing alternate hardware.
Have you ever had a wireless "g" class router in that location before?
Hi,
Your problem sounds very much like mine, if you have sorted yours out you may be able to help me, i feel like i'm going mad, i hae spent so many hours on the phone to Orange, belkin, hp as you say all blaming each other. I have got a HP pavilion notebook, which has been working great for about 3 weeks, bit of trouble getting connected originally, but got there, I decided to get a wireless card for pc not being used (purchased belkin wireless g notebook networks card) installed and could only get the intermitant signal and was unable to view web pages, initally this belkin card did not seem to effect my laptop, then i lost connection on my laptop, so decided to uninstall belkin on pc, and hae spent the last 3 days on to Orange and everyone else and am getting nowhere! the livebox is saying it is connected, byt i am getting the intermittant signal and unable to view web pages, i feel as though i have exhausted Orange technical help team, we hav done everything, reinstalled livebox, restored factory settings, i have typed in the WEP key so many times i know it off by heart, disabled my norton security, i feel as though everything has been checked and rechecked, the frustrating thing is that i have been connected wirelessly and now the only way i can connect is with ethernet cable. Can anyone help me, it is a waste of time ringing Orange, i feel i know as much as them. HELP
DianeS do the wireless connections bring up any pages, including the livebox pages?
In network connections you should have a wireless connection, right click, go into status. Is it showing as connected, if so go into support, what do the address type and IP address show as?
